We want to start this newsletter today by acknowledging the election results, disheartening and distressing to many of us. In moments like this, It's difficult to know how to balance the day to day with the uncertainty and disappointment of the world we live in. Rebecca Solnit has several passages from Hope in the Dark that resonate with us.
"You can be heartbroken or furious or both at once; you can scream in your car or on a cliff; you can also get up tomorrow and water the flowerpots and call someone who's upset and check your equipment for going onward. A lot of us are going to come under direct attack, and a lot of us are going to resist by building solidarity and sanctuary. Gather up your resources, the metaphysical ones that are heart and soul and care, as well as the practical ones."
We talk a lot about resilience in Kala's 50th year of operation. We're channeling that resilience now. We're here for you and are leaning into our core values: creativity and transformation, equity, access and belonging, collaboration and interdependence, and integrity to create a creative community connected through art and exchange.
With love,
Ellen and Mayumi, Kala Co-Directors
