Child Care Chronicles

Michigan Edition

🌟 Hello, Michigan Providers!

This week, let’s bring a little March Madness energy into our classrooms—small wins, strong teamwork, and lots of child-led learning moments. Whether you’re supporting big feelings, planning meaningful activities, or building your professional skills, you’re showing up like a champion for children every day. Let’s make this a “full-court press” kind of week—focused, positive, and fun!

🏆 Tip-Off: New Class Alert!

From Play to Planning: Building Culturally Competent, Child-Centered Curriculum

High-quality early childhood education requires more than just a set of activities—it demands thoughtful integration of developmental standards, evidence-based practices, and cultural responsiveness. In this course, child care providers will explore how to design and adapt curriculum for different age groups, implement emergent learning, and use scaffolding to support every child’s unique growth. Participants will discover strategies to promote play, encourage problem-solving, integrate diversity and anti-bias materials, and create inclusive learning environments for children of all abilities. By the end, providers will be equipped with practical tools to inspire curiosity, respect cultural identities, and foster meaningful learning experiences that prepare children for lifelong success.

⛹️ Fast Break Fun Corner: Classroom Ideas to Try This Week

🎉 Fun Corner: What fun classroom ideas can we do this week?

Try one (or all!) of these quick “wins”:

Bracket of Kindness: Create a classroom bracket with kind acts (help a friend, share materials, invite someone to play). Vote daily!

Mini “Team Jobs” Draft: Let kids “draft” classroom helper roles (line leader, plant helper, book captain) and rotate.

Indoor Movement Madness: Set up 4 “stations” (jumping, tossing, balancing, crawling) and rotate every 2 minutes.

Storytime Buzzer Beater: Read a book and pause near the end—kids predict the ending before the “final buzzer.”

Graph the Win: Do a simple tally chart: favorite read-aloud, center choice, or snack pick. Talk about “most/least.”

📰 Halftime Feature: Coaching Beats Correcting

👧 Which Helps Teachers More: Coaching or Correcting?

Child care leaders often must give staff feedback. Sometimes we correct—we tell someone what to stop or fix right away. Other times we coach—we help the teacher reflect, set goals, and practice new skills. This article explains the difference and gives clear steps you can use today. We will show why coaching helps teachers learn more and how to mix coaching with needed correction.

Try the “Timeout, Not Time-Out” reset:

Name it: “Your body looks upset.”

Breathe it: Smell the flower / blow the candle (3 times).

Move it: Wall push-ups, chair squeezes, or stomp-count to 10.

Choose it: “Do you want cozy corner or help from a teacher?”
