Greetings!
What is an "identity?"
The most general definition is "who or what a person is." Mine one level down and it's "the distinguishing character or personality of an individual." The deeper we go, the more we see how integral identities are to how we see ourselves and experience the world.
So, how do our identities show up in our daily lives? Are you just your demographics? (race, gender, orientation, religion). Are you a list of nouns? (parent, professional, homeowner, runner, social justice warrior, etc). Are you more?
Try these exercises:
- Let’s imagine that you were contacted by a popular magazine. They want to write an in-depth story about your life (work/home/interests/etc.). The journalist needs to prepare before meeting you. The magazine asked if you could provide a brief summary or description about yourself. How would you describe yourself to them? Take a few minutes to write down your response.
- Think of the last in-person networking event you went to. (This might be back in 2019, but that's okay). Perhaps you met two new people? Or ten? If we stopped one of the people you met and asked them to describe you, what do you think they would say? Take a few minutes to write down your response.
I'll bet the first exercise resulted in you listing your bio. Where you went to school...your work history...the makeup of your family. The response to the second exercise probably explored your personality with descriptors like "funny," "genuine," or "warm." Both answers are facets of your identity. There are more facets out there too.
So, why are we talking about identities this month?
Well, how we think of and define ourselves is important. The greater the number and range of identities we see for ourselves, the more opportunities we have to connect with, enjoy, and learn from each other. The more we have in common, the greater possibility to rebuild trust.
