Congratulations, Drew!
YVCHR's Volunteer of the Month
|
|
Drew has been an enthusiastic new addition to the YVC family, and we are grateful for his many contributions already as a youth volunteer!
When asked about his service with YVCHR, he shared that what he loves most about volunteering "is the fact that I get to meet new people and try new experiences that I would’ve never thought of doing." So far, his favorite YVC Project has been the Salvation Army Gift Sorting. Drew says "going through all the different kids' Christmas wishes and finding the items to fulfill their wishes was a touching experience. I feel like anyone who joins YVC will have some aspect of their life changed in one way or another, whether it be small or big!"
When asked what advice he would give to new volunteers, his advice is "to just try something new! Every time I volunteer, I always learn something new and fascinating." He says that he "hopes to see other people join our mission to help make our community better."

Drew (pictured above) loves hanging out with friends and hiking. After high school, Drew plans to continue his education and pursue studies to become an Atmospheric Scientist. Oh, and he hopes to travel the world someday as well!

The Virginia School Boards Association is holding a personal essay/speaking contest where the finalists will have an opportunity to present before an audience of more than 300 school board members and administrators at the 2022 VSBA Conference on Education held at the Richmond Delta Marriott on July 19, 2022.
This is the second year the Virginia School Boards Association will hold this contest. We hope that this contest will bring out the very best in students’ writing and speaking efforts and allow our attendees to witness examples of the bright, thoughtful, and accomplished students from around the Commonwealth. This years topic is Food Security.
This year, thanks to a generous donation from an anonymous sponsor, the top 3 finalists will each receive a $1,000 scholarship. Submissions are open to all Virginia public high school students (grades 9-12), and is a great opportunity to share their unique voices as well as compete for funds to further their education.
For more information on the contest and complete guidelines please view the guidebook attached.
For questions, please contact Brittany Moore, membership services coordinator, at brittany@vsba.org or by calling 434-295-8722 x7.

Did you know that your online shopping purchases can help fund YVCHR programs? Consider designating Youth Volunteer Corps of Hampton Roads as your charity of choice!
-
AmazonSmile will donate 0.5% of your eligible purchases on Amazon to YVCHR.
-
Simply shop at smile.amazon.com. The donation will be made at no extra cost to you.
- Though 0.5% is not a large donation and it isn't intended to replace your regular charitable contributions, AmazonSmile is still a great way to maximize your impact! It all adds up!

High school students and adults who would like to help local schools and nonprofit organizations (like YVCHR!), please consider signing up to volunteer at Community Knights Bingo. Proceeds from bingo are donated back into the Hampton Roads community!
NOTE: Community Knights will sign volunteer logs for those who need evidence of service hours. This is not a YVCHR-facilitated activity, so a team leader from YVCHR will not be on-site.
