NATIONAL CREAM-FILLED DONUT DAY

National Cream-Filled Donut Day on September 14 recognizes one of our favorite foods--the donut. Today, we are bringing your favorite to another level by introducing you to delicious cream inside your donut to create a burst of flavor with each bite.

Cream-filled donuts come in so many varieties. If you aren't a fan of fillings in your pastries, consider trying some of the latest flavors. Not only have bakeries become creative with their fillings, but they've also branched out with their toppings, too.

Top 12 Cream-Filled Donuts

  1. Boston Cream
  2. Bavarian Cream
  3. Chocolate Cream
  4. Lemon Cream
  5. Custard
  6. Strawberry Cream
  7. Vanilla Cream
  8. Fluffernutter Cream
  9. Orange Vanilla Cream
  10. Nutella Cream
  11. Espresso Cream
  12. Coconut Cream

Now, if this list doesn't make you run out and fill an order for at least a dozen, keep reading. And, there's not a sprinkle to be found.

Add bacon crumbles to the maple cream. If you order an espresso cream, ask for a hazelnut drizzle. Of course, if you're in an autumn frame of mind, sprinkle it with pumpkin spice and sugar. Orange vanilla cream makes an excellent dessert when topped with vanilla ice cream. Serve the caramel cream with coffee and cozy up with a good book. When it comes to marshmallow cream, the obvious toppings are chocolate and graham cracker crumbs.

Find Paw Paw’s Donuts at 619 Pink St. Thursday through Sunday, from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Paw Paw’s Donuts continues its Sunday appearances at the Crescent City Farmers Market, 8 a.m. to noon at Tad Gormley Stadium (Marconi at Navarre).

HURRICANE FRANCINE UPDATES FOR

JEFFERSON PARISH BUSINESSES

September 12, 2024

JEDCO has mobilized our emergency operations plan and activated our online resources to support local business in the aftermath of Hurricane Francine. Our staff is currently assessing damage and disruption to businesses in the area. The organization has created several resources to aid in business assessment and recovery.

Hurricane Francine Response Webpage: We encourage all businesses to visit the JEDCO Storm Center, which serves as our online emergency response portal for updated recovery resources, disaster assistance and storm information. If you have resources or information you'd like to see shared on the site, please email kscram@jedco.org. We will be updating this site with new information and resources as they become available.

Hurricane Francine Business Assessment Survey: Jefferson Parish businesses are encouraged to fill out the Hurricane Francine Business Assessment Form to help the JEDCO team respond to immediate needs. The Hurricane Francine Business Assessment Form also allows business owners to provide updated hours of operation, limited menus, or specific storm-related information that customers may need to know.

JEDCO remains a steadfast resource and partner for our local businesses. Our goal is to help bring all affected businesses back into commerce as quickly as possible.

The JEDCO offices are currently closed, but our team is working remotely to provide business support. Please email info@jedco.org or call 504-875-3908 to reach a JEDCO team member.

Join Us For a Meet & Greet Bunny Adoption Event on Saturday, September 14th!

Jefferson SPCA is hosting a meet and greet bunny adoption event at Jefferson Feed, 4421 Jefferson Hwy., Jefferson, LA this Saturday, September 14th, 2024 from 10am-1pm.

Over the last 8-9 months, between 3 local rabbit rescues (Jefferson SPCA, Bunn Again and Lola & Friends) over 90 bunnies and guinea pigs have been rescued from two local parks, Kenner City Park and Lafreniere Park. Many owners are dumping their small animals in the park leaving them as prey. A handful we were too late to save them and they didn't make it out alive.

Hannah, our small adoption coordinator is passionate about bunnies and has so much information to share about rabbits and how they make wonderful pets and can bond with humans. They can even be litter box trained to roam free in your house just like a cat. Some of our adoptable bunnies have been with us over 6 months and not adopted because they are white bunnies. Cottonelle and her sweet 3 girls keep getting passed over for adoption and it's breaking our heart since they have been with us since Cottonelle gave birth the day she was rescued.

You can bring your bunny or bunnies to this event for a quick mani/pedi by our small animal adoption coordinator for a $10 Donation.

Available to volunteer? Please email hannah@jeffersonspca.org

‘Til Beth Do Us Part is a side-splitting comic romp about careens around the strained marriage of Gibby and Suzannah, a couple who have allowed their 27-year marriage grow stale. When new assistant Beth steps in the fireworks begin. Whether you’re married, single, rethinking your divorce or currently being controlled by someone up to no good, you’re sure to enjoy this family friendly, laugh-out-loud comedy.

The cast features Joanna Parr, Shawn Patterson, Stephanie Sayles, Jen Patterson, Laura Hayes, Daniel Jenkins, and Nada Elkassouf. Assistant director is Jen Patterson.

There will be some important changes at Playmakers Theater beginning this season. Evening curtain times will be 7:30 p.m. instead of 7 p.m. to help patrons navigate bridge construction traffic. We will also be adding Friday evening performances. And Playmakers will once again offer reserved seating.

At age 8, he joined School of Rock Metairie/New Orleans and quickly rose to become a drummer for the prestigious School of Rock House Band. NATIONAL EAT A HOAGIE DAY

National Eat a Hoagie Day on September 14 promotes a sandwich which is also known as a grinder, sub or hero. You can also order a po'boy, torpedo or an Italian sandwich to celebrate!

The hoagie consists of meats, cheeses, vegetables, sauces, and seasonings on a long roll of Italian or French bread. However, the origin of this giant sandwich is a bit of a mystery. The epicenter of the controversy seems to be eastern Pennsylvania between the DiCostanzas and DePalma's. Both lay claim to being the first to make the hoagie. One family claims to have been making the sandwich since 1923 and the other since 1925. But who has the proof?

Another story from the Philadelphia area takes place during World War I. It describes shipyard workers bringing large Italian sandwiches to work wrapped in newspaper. The large sandwiches helped the workers through their long, grueling workdays. In fact, the workers nicknamed the massive sandwiches "hoggies" because anyone eating them at one sitting would have to be a hog. The Philadelphia accent explains the transformation of the word. The dialect often exaggerates the vowel sounds changing "hoggies" to "hoagies" quite easily.

One story talks out of school - almost literally. At one time, if a kid skipped school it was called being "on the hook" or "playing hokey." A "hokey" sandwich could be bought for a price a kid on the lam could afford. Eventually "hokey" became "hoagie" especially if the kids were skipping school.

What is the best way to store onions to keep them fresh for a longer time?

What is the best way to store onions to keep them fresh?

Keep storage onions in a cool, dark, and dry place. Moisture and light lead to mold (ew) and sprouting (annoying, though not a deal-breaker), so stow your storage onions (red, yellow, and white as well as shallots and the diminutive pearl and cippoline) in a dry, well-ventilated basket, bin, or large bowl

Classic Retrovision Milestones

64 years ago today, September , 1960, Thriller (also known as Boris Karloff's Thriller and Boris Karloff Presents) premiered. It is an American anthology television series that aired during the 1960–61 and 1961–62 seasons on NBC. The show featured host Boris Karloff introducing a mix of macabre horror tales and suspense thrillers.

Thriller was created by Hubbell Robinson for MCA's Revue Studios. Though remembered primarily as a series that emphasized gothic horror, under producer Fletcher Markle Thriller was initially a series oriented towards suspense and crime drama, in the manner of Alfred Hitchcock Presents. Markle was let go after having completed eight episodes, and replaced by Maxwell Shane. Shane continued in the crime drama mold, though he began to add trappings of gothic horror to a few stories, but he too was replaced after having completed a further nine episodes. The rest of the first season and all of the second was produced by William Frye, who firmly moved Thriller into the format for which it would be most well-remembered, although non-horror crime and mystery stories would still be featured from time to time throughout the show's run.

Among the many writers for the series were Donald S. Sanford, Robert Hardy Andrews, and Robert Bloch, who adapted a number of his own stories, notably "The Weird Tailor". Authors whose works were frequently adapted included August Derleth, Charlotte Armstrong and Cornell Woolrich.

In addition to serving as the host of the series, Karloff also starred in five episodes: "The Prediction", "The Premature Burial", "The Last of the Sommervilles", "Dialogues With Death", and "The Incredible Doctor Markesan".

Other actors included Leslie Nielsen in the show's first episode "The Twisted Image", William Shatner in two episodes, "The Hungry Glass" and "The Grim Reaper", Constance Ford in two episodes, Mary Tyler Moore in two episodes, Henry Daniell in five episodes, and Edward Andrews in three episodes. Child actress Beverly Washburn appeared in "Parasite Mansion"; Joan Tompkins appeared in "The Cheaters" and "Mr. George". Elizabeth Montgomery, Tom Poston, and John Carradine in "Masquerade". In Danse Macabre, Stephen King's 1981 history and critique of horror fiction, King suggests that Thriller was the best series of its kind up to that point.

Alfred Hitchcock hastened the demise of the series after he came aboard on NBC with The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, an expanded one-hour version of his previous half-hour series Alfred Hitchcock Presents. Hitchcock apparently did not want two similar one-hour shows on at the same time

Join the award-winning (1st place, baby!) NOLA Jitterbugs for a 6-week series with live music in the last class!

Our live music classes with local musicians and culture bearers, as well as our overall emphasis on music appreciation is what makes our lessons stand out among the rest!

Starts at The Contemporary Arts Center!

6-7pm Intro to Swing

For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.

7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level

This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

No partner required to take either of these classes. Come alone or with friends!

Comedy House New Orleans

The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)

CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)

609-610 Fulton St

New Orleans, LA 70130

Mon, August 19

8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

(Entry at 7:30 pm)

The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.

Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.

The list of performers? A total mystery.

The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.

How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.

When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.

Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

It’s Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s Manchac & Middendorf’s Slidell! Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September, handmade paper-thin fettuccine is on the menu.

This mouth-watering dish is served with your choice of classic Alfredo or Marinara Sauce and topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with optional add-ons of shrimp, crabmeat and chicken.

  • Fettuccine with Alfredo Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
  • Fettuccine with Marinara Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
  • Optional add-ons:
  • Shrimp
  • Crabmeat
  • Chicken
  • Side of Fettuccine topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese

Fun Facts:

  • Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
  • Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
  • Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
  • Our full menu is also available.
  • Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.

We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!

FALL RHYTHM & ROSES CONCERTS ANNOUNCED

Jon Cleary Kicks Off Star-Studded Line-Up for Friday Concerts

The Historic BK House & Gardens is offering music afficionados a special treat this fall with a new Rhythm & Roses Concert Series, extending the popular spring concerts into September, October and November. British-born, American funk and R&B musician Jon Cleary will kick off the series with a solo performance on Friday, September 27, at 6 pm. Cleary, an accomplished pianist, multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and songwriter, will perform from 6-9 pm in the beautifully manicured BK House Parterre Garden, 1113 Chartres Street.

Rhythm & Roses, presented by BK house neighbor and benefactor James Douglas Hislop, will run through Friday, November 1, except for October 11, and will feature a wide array of popular New Orleans talents. The opening concert will be presented in part by NOLAxNOLA.

Future dates include:

October 4:            Jason Neville Funky Soul Band

October 18:           Helen Gillet and Rebelle Musique

October 25:           Dusky Waters & Rachel Maxann

November 1:         Jelly Joseph

Tickets are priced at $30 for nonmembers and $25 for BK members and are available at www.bkhouse.org. Food and beverages will be sold on site. Because beverage sales support on-going maintenance of the garden, outside beverages will not be permitted.

Concert-goers are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance due to anticipated popularity of the event and size of the historic setting. Limited seating will be provided; however, attendees may bring small chairs provided space allows.

Also in September, BK House will host the second annual Beautiful Spaces Symposium on Saturday, September 14, focusing on the legacy of gardens in New Orleans.  The inspiring day will explore the rich history, design and cultural significance of the city’s gardens and will feature distinguished experts covering a broad spectrum of landscapes from formal parterre gardens to indigenous wild spaces. For the fourth consecutive year, Louisiana will showcase its vibrant culture in the 2025 Tournament of Rose Parade in Pasadena, California! This year’s float, featuring a Louisiana alligator adorned with beads, a Cajun dance hall, and pots of boiled seafood, perfectly captures the essence of a “Louisiana Saturday Night.” Plus, enjoy mid-parade entertainment by rising country star Timothy Wayne!

We can’t wait to share Louisiana’s celebratory spirit and unique culture with the world once again.
