Faith Re-Imagined
by Bailey Roberts
When I decided to study theology, I had never read the Bible. Heck, I had barely even darkened the door of a church. I was critical, reckless with my doubt, and deeply skeptical of those who labeled themselves as Christians. Yet, I remained curious.
My first class on theology didn’t begin with scripture. In truth, we didn’t open a Bible in that class at all. Rather, we read the likes of Walter Brueggemann, Paul Tillich, Mary Daly, James Cone, etc. The earliest glimpse of what would become my Christian faith was grounded in liberation, systematic, and academic theologies. Those traditions became the lens through which I would eventually approach the Bible. My Christian faith began with how others imagined it to be. I read the Bible in bits and pieces through others’ interpretations. As you can imagine, I thought I knew everything after that first year of college.
Growing up, I had a wild imagination. On occasion, my Nana likes to remind me about the ways in which I structured and ordered the world I carefully created and lived in. At pre-school age I would assign her specific roles and parts, curating a story that would unfold in real time. She laughs about it now, remembering every detail and telling me about it whenever I see her (it’s been almost three years, so some storytelling is overdue). In time, that imaginative participation slowly started to ...

Susie Rodriguez Ordination
This Saturday, June 27 at 11:00am, we will celebrate Susie Rodriguez's ordination to the Sacred Order of Deacons. The service will take place at Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Austin, as Transfiguration sends its ordinands through the Diocese of Texas. The ceremony can be viewed via livestream here.
Susie recently completed three years of study through the Iona School for Ministry, a special program in the Diocese of Texas that trains persons called to bi-vocational ministry in the Church. Later this summer she will begin her ordained ministry at St. Luke's in the Meadow Episcopal Church in Fort Worth. We are incredibly proud of Susie and all the people raised up by Transfiguration over the decades to serve the wider Church.

Choir Anthems Celebrate 250 Years
The music chosen for Sunday, July 5 will feature special hymns and prayers for our nation, as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the founding of our country. The full Transfiguration Choir will sing the 11:15am service and will offer an anthem by Gerre Hancock set to the text “Judge Eternal Throned in Splendor,” composed for the 1988 Houston convention of the American Guild of Organists. A native of Lubbock, Texas, Dr. Hancock (1934-2012) was the organist and master of the choristers at St. Thomas Episcopal Church on Fifth Avenue in New York City for over 30 years. The 9:00am service will feature anthems on early American tunes by our section leaders. Both services will conclude with a "four-hands, four-feet" organ transcription of John Philip Sousa’s march, “The Stars and Stripes Forever”, played by our own Joel Martinson and Jonathan Gregoire.

Born in Saskatoon, Canada, of Norwegian-American parents, Marilyn grew up in Marshalltown, Iowa, met her husband Ronald at Luther College, and followed him to the Twin Cities where he attended Luther Seminary and she worked in Christian education. Much of her family will be gathered on July 5 to celebrate with her. Please come and raise a toast to this special woman!
