This BobBlast is Part One, continuing working with color and landscapes. This time, I am interpreting the transition of a landscape moving into the fall season. Am I going to exaggerate and bend the rules? Of course!
In this BobBlast, I do two demos, improvising with my take of the Fall Colors for West Coast (goldens) and East Coast (bright multi colors).
I start the first demo by making a mess on pre-gessoed watercolor paper. The watercolor paper has a mid tone orange all over the surface. My colors change, depending on a lot of factors and whether I am wanting a warm palette or a cool palette. For my thoughts, a West Coast landscape can be mostly warm tones, while East Coast is generally a cool tone.
First Technique:
Working with that overall orange mid tone, I apply a mix of bright acrylics—including Holbein’s Luminous Acrylics in Lemon, Red, Orange and Opera for the tree. I add Holbein’s Phthalo Blue for the suggestion of the tree trunk. Negative shape painting finishes it off—paint everything but the tree!
Second Technique:
Starting with an unfinished drip tree painting, I add colorful foliage and tree trunks. Then mix a blue for the sky and darken the ground in the landscape.
In painting a transition into the Fall season, I like to keep my options open in selecting colors. Do the Fall trees have hot pink colors and purple leaves? In BobLand they do! Have fun with color and don’t be afraid to exaggerate what you see.
In Part Two, we will have even more fun with color as we explore “Non-Local Color” and turn color upside down!
