Bill Macey
Raised in Atlanta, Bill was the only Jewish boy in his class, subject to uncomfortable hazing. He was also underachieving relative to his abilities until a challenge from his father -- “If you get into an Ivy, maybe you don’t have to go to University of Georgia…” -- turned him into a straight-A student. He graduated from Dartmouth in 1975 and Yale Law School in 1978.
Bill began his legal career at Cravath, Swaine & Moore, then pivoted to investment banking, joining Smith Barney’s M&A team in 1983. He became a managing director in 1989, during the 80’s takeover boom. By 1992, Bill co-founded Sterling Investment Partners, a Westport-based private equity firm. Their early deals were highly successful, allowing them to raise their first fund in 1999.
In 1992, Bill and his wife Sharon moved to Weston and had three children. They later relocated to Wilton to be closer to their kids’ school and activities. Now in its 33rd year, Sterling Partners is still thriving, but Bill, now 71, expects to have more time as the younger partners assume management roles in the firm.
Sharon launched the podcast Mom To More©, now in the top 2.5 percent of podcasts globally – a tough act to follow! Bill is active with, and a significant contributor to, No Labels, the national political reform group. He also continues to mentor a few startups for the fun of it, and maintains a strong exercise routine.
But as he looks ahead, he expects to have more time for active community service — so Bill joined the Y’s Men to meet others in a similar place and perhaps find new inspiration.
