Summary:
- Speakers gave insights about the whole recruitment process, discussed various criteria involved in screening applicants, emphasized on “quality over quantity” when it comes to publications.
- Interactive panel discussion wherein questions were targeted to each of the panelists under 3 themes-Recruitment process, Job application materials and interview, Challenges after joining.
Key points:
Publications that have created an impact in the field are important, selection criteria based on nature of work varies each year, IITs are majorly a teaching institute so candidate needs to be prepared for teaching commitments, seed grant is provided initially to setup the lab, candidate needs to determine if they are the right “fit” in the institute, more publications are generally considered negative.

Sanu is a computational biologist involved in using mathematical models to study metabolism in biological systems. He is currently an Assistant Professor at IISER Thiruvananthapuram. His research involves using metabolic models to develop a better understanding of plant and parasite metabolism. He first heard of Sci-ROI in 2021 while he was still a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Oxford, and attended our 2021 annual event. As someone who was looking to move his research to India, he instantly recognized the value of the work Sci-ROI was undertaking and joined the Sci-ROI volunteer team in 2022 to help with the cause.

Sivaraj is a neurobiologist fascinated by cell communication and their use of energy. Currently, as a postdoc at the Max Planck Institute for Multidisciplinary Sciences, Gottingen, Germany, he uses sophisticated metabolic sensors to validate changes in metabolic products at the cellular level. Sci-ROI first caught his eye in 2022 through a YouTube video featuring scientists from the Science and Engineering Research Board and top Indian universities discussing funding options in India. Since he has always planned on returning to India and setting up his own lab, he was immediately drawn to Sci-ROI's work. As a result, he joined Sci-ROI 2023's volunteer team, especially its podcast and outreach teams.
