When arriving at the church for worship services on Sunday, many people, especially those who enter through the Pleasant Street Narthex, will notice something different. The American and Christian flags, which had been displayed in the front of the Sanctuary prior to the remodeling of the Chancel, will be in the Narthex. In this note, I will answer some of the questions I anticipate will be asked.
Why were the flags removed from the Sanctuary in the first place?
The flags were removed and safely stored at the beginning of the construction project to protect them from harm.
Why weren’t the flags put back in the Sanctuary when the remodeling project was finished?
It seems that since they were tucked away in a safe place, they were forgotten in the rush to clean up all of the construction dust and put everything back together for Easter Sunday. Many of us didn’t notice for quite some time! In the last month or so, there have been some inquiries about the flags. Please understand that in no way was there any intention to disparage the flags, or those who have served in the military.
Why are the flags in the Narthex now instead of the Sanctuary?
It has come to the attention of the Church Council that there are people who do not feel the Sanctuary is an appropriate place for national flags. This will surprise many of you, as it did me when I first learned about it. Most of us have grown up seeing the American and Christian flags in churches we have attended over the years, and haven’t thought much about it.
We would like to take some time to have an all-church discussion about the symbolism of flags and what they mean to us. We will learn about the history of the display of national flags in churches, the origin of the Christian flag, and hopefully learn more about one another as we discuss our feelings about displaying flags in the sanctuary or in the church building in general. Our hope for the conversation will be to listen deeply to one another, to understand one another’s positions, and to seek to find consensus about where the flags should be going forward. Stay tuned for information on when this conversation will be scheduled.
