Professor Glenn Short's Fellowship at the University of Murcia

in Southeastern Spain

Glenn uses the book Transformative Emotional Intelligence for a Positive Career and Life (Low & Hammett, 2021) in his courses at Sul Ross State University. He completed his EI Learning Systems Certification in TEI back in 2006 and has incorporated TEI in many aspects of this counseling, teaching, and research. Glenn Short (right), an Instructor of Education and a professor of practice in Counseling at Sul Ross State University, was invited to the University of Murcia in Spain for a lecture and research fellowship in March.

Short presented “An Exploration of Transformative Emotional Intelligence Skills” and collaborated on a comparative analysis of counseling students from SRSU and Murcia regarding emotional intelligence, values and motivational tendencies with Dr. Juan Pedro Martinez Ramon, Dr. Cecilia Maria Ruiz Esteban and Dr. Maria Immaculada Mendez Mateo, faculty in the Department of Developmental and Educational Psychology.

Participants in the fellowship researched practical life philosophy of emotional intelligence and the interpersonal and intrapersonal components of the Transformative Emotional Intelligence model (TEI) to further define how these skills are influenced by values, behavioral style and quality of motivation perspective.

During his visit, Short also conducted literature reviews on school coexistence and aspects that affect the development of well-being in the educational community; researched high impact academic journals to facilitate joint publications and explore the possibility of organizing conferences, lectures or seminars on the topic of study; and designed joint projects, participating in competitive calls and establishing bases for future collaborations in training courses.

“I am thrilled and deeply honored to have had the opportunity to lecture at the University of Murcia. It is exciting to represent Sul Ross State University in this capacity,” said Short. “This experience is particularly meaningful to me, as it allowed me to share my passion for Emotional Intelligence and connect with brilliant minds from around the world.”

The University of Murcia in southeastern Spain was established in 1272 and is the third oldest university in the country. The international institution has more than 30,000 students and 3,000 researchers and lecturers.

Award Recipients – Congratulations!

Since the 1970s, over 80 doctoral studies have been completed using the skills-based models of emotional intelligence (EI) created by Drs. Darwin Nelson and Gary Low. There is much remaining to learn, and the Transformative Emotional Intelligence (TEI) Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, provides grants and scholarships for research to extend learning and knowledge about the practical applications of EI to facilitate the development of healthy individuals, schools, communities, and organizations.

Sometimes scholars require outside financial support to pursue their social science research. The TEI Foundation provides competitive grants to support qualifying research activities in the name of Darwin B. Nelson for Outstanding Research in Transformative Emotional Intelligence. Scholarships may also be awarded to support academic tuition, support for publication, and meaningful participation to present research findings in both national and international conferences in the name of Gary R. Low for Excellence in Education and Training with Transformative Emotional Intelligence.

Congratulations to the following EI Conference/Certification Workshop participants who received Gary R. Low scholarships to attend the 2025 – 22nd Annual Institute for Emotional Intelligence.

Dr. DM Vinoth of the Pegasus Institute Visits Corpus Christi, Texas

During his whirlwind trip across the United States learning about emotional intelligence, Dr. DM Vinoth took time to stop and visit with TEI colleagues in Corpus Christi. Pictured above, from left, Dr. Vinoth shares lunch during his visit with Dr. Gina Hawkins, Dr. Julie Chancler, Dr. George Potter, and Dr. Lauren Denver-Potter. Before lunch, DM visited Lauren's lecture class in Abnormal Psychology, and toured the campus of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. After lunch he was shown some of the highlight landmarks of Corpus Christi while discussing tenets of Transformative Emotional Intelligence (TEI) with Julie. Among the tenets that were of interest included the short definition of TEI (the learned ability to think constructively and act wisely), the importance of reflection over reaction, and Seymour Epstein's Cognitive-Experiential Self-Theory (constructive versus destructive thinking). DM was also provided a copy of the illustration from our 2021 book (Transformative Emotional Intelligence for a Positive Career And Life), The Roots and Branches of TEI and invited to complete the online Skills for Career And Life Effectiveness®, positive assessment instrument. DM has also joined the Emotional Intelligence Leadership Advisory Working Group and participated in recent monthly meetings. We look forward to Dr. Vinoth's continued collegial involvement and participation in this work!

By Tiago Manuel Horta Reis da Silva, Rick Hammett, and

Gary Low

The chapter explores the critical role of Emotional Intelligence (EI) in modern business environments, emphasizing its impact on leadership, collaboration, and overall organizational performance. By integrating theoretical frameworks and empirical evidence, the chapter elucidates how EI contributes to effective leadership, fosters team collaboration, and enhances performance metrics. The discussion extends to practical applications, providing strategies for developing EI within corporate settings and its implications for business outcomes. The chapter concludes with insights into future research directions and the evolving significance of TEI in increasingly complex business landscapes.

A Transformative Model for Teaching and Learning Emotional Intelligence for Aspiring Entrepreneurial Leaders

In this article, the authors suggest that although several programs integrate key emotional intelligence (EI) concepts, there are few examples of how to develop an integrated learning framework for teaching and learning EI skills for daily use. The authors introduce a practical transformative model of emotional intelligence (TEI) that emphasizes the personally meaningful development of personal, emotional, relationship, and life (PERL) skills that are so important for school, work, and life success. A 1-day seminar experience embedded in a European-based international summer school course in the School of Management, Fribourg, Switzerland, generated new evidence for how a skills-based curriculum in EI can be used to empower future entrepreneurs and leaders.

Online Skills for Career And Life Effectiveness® (SCALE®)

As of August 2024, online SCALE® now allows Project Managers to upload additional .CSV file formats when assigning instruments to individuals within projects. In addition to UTF-7 formatted .CSVs, PMs may now assign SCALE® instruments to end users with .CSV files formatted as Apple Macintosh, MS-DOS, and Unspecified. These new file format types are provided below (screenshots from an Apple MacBook):

CSV Macintosh
MS DOS
CSV Unspecified

As a reminder, from the previous updates this summer, now PMs will automatically recoup any unused instruments on the day following a project's expiration. Here is what PMs and ABPs need to know about this upgrade.

  • When a project expires, the PM will be notified by email from no_reply@doscale.com concerning any recoupments.
  • If the client does not begin their SCALE® by submitting at least one item response, that instrument will be recouped into the PM's bank and will no longer be available in the client's portal.
  • If the client submits at least one item response but does not finish their SCALE®, that instrument will remain in the client's portal under UNFINISHED SCALEs.
  • If the client has an unfinished SCALE® and a new SCALE® is assigned, when the client logs back in they will see both instruments under UNFINISHED SCALEs. For this reason, a paragraph has been added to the Returning User instructions to contact the PM to determine whether they should complete the unfinished or newly assigned instrument. If you instruct them to complete the unfinished instrument, the new one will be recouped when the project expires.
  • Any assessment(s) listed under UNFINISHED SCALEs in the client portal are identified by the date(s) they were assigned.
  • Assessments listed under FINISHED SCALEs in the client portal are identified by the date they were completed.

If you have any questions or would like to meet with Rick Hammett to go though the PM portal and functionality, please let us know at Support@EiLearningSys.com.

The 2025 Personal Excellence Award Recipients

Beginning with the 4Th Annual EI Conference in 2007, Personal Excellence Award recipients have been selected and announced during each annual EI conference. The Personal Excellence Award is based on exemplary personal, professional, career, and leadership applications for helping individuals and organizations make a difference in the quality of life and career performance of others. The first award was presented to Margo Murray, MMHA - The Managers' Mentors, for her seminal work in mentoring and facilitating quality performance with her global alliance partners. Since then, many organizational, community, and academic leaders have been recognized through the Emotional Intelligence Training and Research Institute's Personal Excellence Award. This year's recipients included Gerald Sewell and Dr. Rose Baker.

Congratulations to Gerald Sewell

Since attending his first EI Certification Workshop and Conference Workshop in 2010, Gerald's many EI contributions and accomplishments have included publishing an EI book, Emotional Intelligence for Military Leaders and creating a very popular EI course for leadership students in the U.S. Army's Command and General Staff College (Department of Command & Leadership). Thank you, Gerald, for your continued contributions to the emerging theory and practice of Transformative Emotional Intelligence.

Emotional Intelligence For Military Leaders

Congratulations to Dr. Rose Baker

Dr. Rose Baker is an accomplished researcher and research supervisor who has been involved with and supported the annual institutes for emotional intelligence for many years. Her involvement in conference planning through her participation in the EI Leadership Advisory Working Group (EI LAWG) has helped improve the annual EI conference and programs year after year. Dr. Baker has been a steadfast participant and contributor in the EI LAWG despite her remarkable University of North Texas workload, her own research agenda, and her direct oversight of original doctoral dissertation research conducted by her students. Thank you, Rose, for your meaningful involvement and ongoing support.

The Emotional Intelligence

Leadership Advisory Working Group (EI LAWG)

The Emotional Intelligence Leadership Advisory Working Group (EI LAWG) met 5/20/24 to discuss ideas for the twenty-third annual EI conference. It is looking like Corpus Christi will be the destination for the next conference and it seems like the second week in November (9 - 14) will be the dates. Theme updates from last week's meeting are provided below, along with additional theme ideas that have provided by email since the meeting.

  • Modeling TEI Skills In Everything We Do
  • Healthy Living Skills for Family, Work, and Life
  • Skills for Thriving in the Twenty-First Century
  • Building Resilience in Systemically Challenging Times
  • Transformative Emotional Intelligence (TEI) Skills for Healthy Family, Work, and Life
  • Modeling Healthy Living for Family, Work, and Life WithTEI
  • Modeling TEI Skills In Everything We Do
  • Flourishing Together: Emotional Intelligence for Personal Growth, Purposeful Work, and Meaningful Connection
  • The Role of TEI in Uncertain Times

Note that first theme was repeated with the following rationale provided by Dr. Paula Kenny-Wallace:

In higher ed, we are now seeing the result of a pandemic lockdown on our freshman students; isolation during important formative years as 7th, 8th, 9th graders has indirectly negatively impacted their abilities to function successfully in the college arenas. Now more than ever this group of students is in need of "modeling" what TEI looks like and how to apply these "missing" skills to both college and life. Academic dishonesty is also at an all-time high, with students being unable to distinguish between using devices and applications to complete assignments and tests/exams from the cheating because their use is not their own original work.

If you have thoughts about the 2026 conference theme, please share before our next EI LAWG meeting schedule for June 21, 2025. Email your ideas to Support@EiLearningSys.com.

You are invited to join the EI LAWG and help us plan the 2026 – 23rd Annual institute for Emotional Intelligence. Please email Support@eEiLearningSys.com to join! From our October 2024 meeting, pictured from upper left are Margo Murray, Rick Hammett, Gary Low, Kaye Nelson, James Polk, Vincent Amatuzzi, Fritz Lebowsky, Rose Baker, Tanya Seagraves-Robinson, and Ali Esmaeili.
