RANGER CHECKPOINT

July 29, 2024

Urgent Message from the President:

Fellow Rangers –

Cissi and I pray all of you are doing well and enjoying the summer with family and friends. I wanted to provide you an update on the desecration of the Ranger Memorial and am calling all Rangers for assistance in this fight!

Memorial Desecration Legal Battle - The National Ranger Memorial Foundation (NRMF) is currently engaged in a critical legal battle against the U.S. Department of Defense and other defendants to protect the legacy of John S. Mosby. On April 15, 2024, the NRMF filed a Second Amended Complaint challenging the removal of Mosby’s name from the Ranger Hall of Fame and a commemorative brick paver. The defendants responded with a Motion to Dismiss on June 14, 2024, citing various legal grounds. On July 19, 2024, the NRMF filed a detailed response to this motion, asserting that the removal violated the Administrative Procedure Act (APA) and was an arbitrary and capricious decision by the Naming Commission. The defendants' reply brief is due on August 2, 2024.

As we await the Court's decision on the Motion to Dismiss, the outcome remains uncertain. If the motion is denied, the defendants will have to file an Answer, and the parties will proceed with discovery, including document exchanges and depositions. Alternatively, the Court might partially grant and deny the motion, allowing some aspects of the case to move forward. If the case progresses, the NRMF hopes for a settlement that would at least require the return of Mosby’s name to the Ranger Hall of Fame. This legal fight is not just about preserving history but upholding principles of fairness and due process.

If the Motion to Dismiss is granted, we will not be deterred. We plan to appeal to a higher court, continuing our fight for justice and the recognition John S. Mosby deserves. This extended battle underscores the importance of your financial support and donations. We are up against the government, which has endless resources. However, we are fighting for your rights and we need to win this war. To continue this crucial battle, we greatly appreciate your donations, which will enable us to maintain our efforts and seek justice for Mosby’s legacy and the values of the National Ranger Memorial Foundation.

Call to action!

Campaign Name: "Join the Fight for the Gray Ghost - $19 for Reinstatement"

Campaign Cause: To date, the National Ranger Memorial Foundation has spent over $100,000 in legal expenses to overturn this decision. Our case is pending in Federal Court.

Campaign Goal: To generate recurring donations of $19 per month to support efforts to reinstate Colonel John S. Mosby into the Ranger Hall of Fame.

Campaign Overview: Colonel John S. Mosby, known as the "Gray Ghost," was a legendary figure whose guerrilla tactics during the Civil War have inspired generations of military strategists, including the U.S. Army Rangers. Despite his historical significance, Mosby was recently removed from the Ranger Hall of Fame. This directive was based on a highly controversial interpretation of legislation passed by the 117th Congress, since enacted as Public Law 116-283, which has far-reaching implications.

We invite you to join our campaign to honor his legacy and fight for his rightful place in history with a recurring donation of $19 per month. CLICK HERE TO JOIN THE FIGHT!
