Free Information Session: ASCEND for Employees — Supporting Workplace Integration

Prince George employers are invited to learn about ASCEND for Employees, a free, self-paced eLearning program developed by the Immigrant Employment Council of BC (IEC-BC). The program helps employees, particularly internationally trained professionals, build confidence in workplace communication, understand Canadian workplace expectations, and strengthen collaboration within their teams.

Join this virtual information session to discover how ASCEND can complement your onboarding, training, and workforce development efforts. The session will provide an overview of the program, highlight the key skills employees will develop, explain how the program is delivered, and outline how your organization can offer ASCEND to your team.

Note from the Executive Director

The cup half full or the cup half empty is all about perspective.

Owning and operating a business in the current environment is tough. Blood, sweat, and tears are mandatory, along with a bottomless supply of patience and resilience.

The challenges are numerous, from homelessness, toxic drugs, and crime to excessive regulation and taxation, massive government deficits, and eroding consumer confidence, coupled with record consumer debt. Faced with those obstacles and the other internal issues that always rear their head, some entrepreneurs decide it’s time to close their doors and do something else. We’re certainly seeing some of that but we’re also seeing plenty of business growth in Prince George right now.

Let’s start with the businesses that have opened in the last handful of years (and are Chamber members): Baller Food, Worth A Shot Mobile Bar, Shine Property Services, Vitreo Minerals, Open Waters Solar, Busy Boss Communications, Inspire Productions, Precision FX, Praxis Solutions, Nechako Ridge Denturist, 3 Goblins Games, The Dudley, Auntie Clockwise, MDAS Media, Fir Haven, Waypoint North Cleaning, Jack’s Coffee Co., Laser Pavement Solutions, and Allan Events Co.

That incomplete list (apologies to the new businesses and Chamber members I didn’t mention) speaks to the diversity of the local business ecosystem.

Now add to this the major local and regional projects coming online:

- The $1.7 billion University Hospital of Northern BC acute care tower

- The Lheidli T’enneh First Nation’s Nilhts’i Ecoener Wind Project

- Enbridge’s Sunrise Expansion Project of the Westcoast Pipeline System

- BC Hydro’s North Coast Transmission Line Project

At the recent B2B Expo, the keynote speaker was Leah King of Tyke Town Early Learning. Leah opened her first daycare in downtown Prince George in October 2024, with support from Community Futures Fraser Fort George. Less than two years later, Leah now operates five downtown daycares with 85 kids and has a waiting list of 800. And she is fielding calls from neighbouring communities asking her to open a Tyke Town in their town.

In spite of the challenges, why are entrepreneurs like Leah, along with corporations and governments, choosing to invest in Prince George and north-central BC?

Opportunity.

That’s what Leah saw and continues to see, same as the other new business owners and operators, and same as the other ambitious attendees at the B2B Expo.

At the moment, the going is tough but the tough are definitely getting going. That entrepreneurial and investment confidence should fill us with optimism in the local economy in the months and years ahead. The cup is half full and getting fuller.

All the best to you and your business.
