Baby Season!
Rattlesnakes give live birth between August and September. If you are seeing an uptick in snakes, that is part of the reason. The other reason is we have had a pretty wet summer. This increases the food sources for the snakes.
How can you stay safe? Check out the Wildlife page on EmoryCrossing.com.
Snakes are not aggressive. They will not chase you. Gaping (mouth open) is a sign it is scared. Move in the other direction to avoid making the snake feel threatened. Humans are not prey.
What about dogs? There is rattle snake awareness training that can be done. This training allows dogs to alert their owner of a snake. Most vets also have a rattlesnake vaccine available.
What about kids? You have to teach them to be careful. Don't stick your hand in holes. Lift pots and other items away from you. Be aware of your surroundings.
How can I keep them away? Make sure your lawn is mowed regularly and that trash is properly stored. Snakes seek food. Rats love tall grass and trash bins.
