Recipe | Fruit Sherbet | From First Lady Martha Washington

George and Martha Washington welcomed thousands of guests to Mount Vernon (just south of Old Town Alexandria, Virginia) and were well known for their boundless hospitality, frequent and memorable parties, and the wide variety of culinary treats served. This was only possible because of the work of enslaved butlers, housemaids, waiters, cooks and others.

Recipes at George Washington's Mount Vernon are adapted from historical cookbooks used by Martha Washington at Mount Vernon and other 18th century elite women. This Fruit Sherbet recipe is an adaptation of one prepared in First Lady Martha Washington's kitchen, using ingredients available to the 18th century cook but using 21st century methods of preparation and cooking.
