Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

As we prepare for the festival, we also preparing for the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, known as All Souls Day, next weekend.

For more than 1,000 years, this feast has been celebrated. Remembering the dead on November 2nd became official in the year 998 when the Abbot at the Cluny monastery in France made it obligatory.

Well before that, however, in the 2nd century, Christians prayed for and celebrated the Eucharist for their beloved dead, normally on the third day after burial, then on the anniversary. Later, in the 7th and 30th day after death became days on which it became customary to pray for the deceased.

The tradition continues in our contemporary celebrations, from the popular devotion, Día de los Muertos to inscribing the names of our beloved in the Book of the Dead.

We've had the custom of celebrating All Souls with candles in the sanctuary bearing the names of our beloved departed. The names are recited during the All Souls Mass, which highlights the Paschal Mystery, Jesus’ victory over sin and death.

Additionally, our Schola offers a classical musical accompaniment. This year, it is offering the appropriate parts of Mozart's Requiem. All Souls falls on a Sunday, so the Requiem mass will be offered at the Saturday Vigil mass next weekend.

Please inscribe the names of your beloved in our parish Book of the Dead located near the baptismal font.

Let us pray especially for Paulist Father Brad Schoeberle, who served as Associate Pastor from 2000 - 2005 and then as Administrator of our parish from 2005 - 2007 during the illness of Father Tom Jones. He is well remembered as caring and thoughtful priest.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord,

and let perpetual light shine upon them.

May they rest in peace. Amen.

Peace, Father Gil
