Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ:

There is a new traffic roundabout located directly in front of the Church at the intersection of Ohio, Selby, and Wilkins Avenues.

The installation of the roundabout was the result of a careful and collaborative process centered on one priority: the safety of our children, parishioners attending mass and other events, and everyone who walks through our neighborhood. To accommodate the roundabout, handicapped parking on Ohio Avenue was reduced to one space from two and moved slightly west of the intersection.

In 2024, more than 350 parents and neighbors shared their concerns with the City about pedestrian safety at the intersection of Ohio, Wilkins, and Selby in front of our Church. I'm grateful to Britten Shuford and a team of parents who coordinated our engagement with the city. In response, the City worked closely with Council District 5, the Los Angeles Department of Transportation, and Caltrans to carefully study the intersection and evaluate ways to make it safer.

The review was led by Jarrett Thompson, Council District 5's Transportation Director, together with the City's traffic safety team. After extensive analysis, they concluded that a roundabout would provide the safest solution for this, particularly for the many students and families who cross the intersection each day.

We also sought the perspective of independent traffic professionals. They agreed that a roundabout was a sound approach based on successful installations at other elementary schools and shared additional ideas, such as raised crosswalks and flashing beacons. Those suggestions were passed along to the City, which determined were not feasible.

I hope that the new roundabout contributes to creating a safer environment for our children, families, neighbors, and all who visit Saint Paul's.

Thank you for your patience, understanding, and continued commitment to making our parish and school community a safe and welcoming place for everyone.

Peace and blessings,

Father Gil
