Your guide to the Olympics

More than 10,000 athletes have descended on Paris for more than two weeks of competition, patriotism and potential drama. NPR is sending a small team of reporters and editors — including newly appointed Sports Correspondent Becky Sullivan and Deputy National Editor Russell Lewis — for the summer Olympics. They'll be looking for stories that don't get much coverage from other news organizations, to provide a unique perspective on the Paris games. Listen for their reporting over the next few weeks and check in on all the games with NPR's online guide:

Limited podcast series from Embedded: Tested

Who gets to compete? Since the beginning of women's sports, there has been a struggle over who qualifies for the women's category. A new 6-part podcast series from NPR's Embedded, Tested follows the unfolding story of elite female runners who have been told they can no longer race in the women's category unless they change their biology. As the Olympics approach, they face hard choices: take drugs to lower their natural testosterone levels, give up their sport entirely, or fight. CBC journalist Rose Eveleth traces the surprising 100-year history of sex testing.

Sunday Radio Matinee: 'Staycation: All I ever wanted'

Summer is here, and for many that means vacation. While traveling far and wide can be an amazing experience, the carbon cost of traveling is significant. What if we could rekindle a sense of awe in our own neighborhoods? That's the premise of 'Staycation,' a one-hour special from author and adventurer Alastair Humphreys, who spent a year exploring his own neighborhood. It's the KGOU Sunday Radio Matinee this week, July 28 at 12 p.m.

And finally, a personal note...

After almost 19 years as KGOU's Membership Director and newsletter editor, I'm retiring. At the outset, I never intended to stay so long, but I found the work to be gratifying, the people terrific, and there was such a great atmosphere of learning and growing. Getting to know donors and listeners like you has been a high point. I can't leave without expressing my gratitude for all you've done, and will continue to do, for KGOU and the public radio system as a whole. Thank you. And now, I'm off on my next adventure!
