Dear Residents -

After a few winters with little to no snow, it seems that Mother Nature is reminding us who is in charge! Late Saturday and into Sunday, a storm system is expected to hit the region, with accumulating snow and the possibility of sleet and freezing rain. But she may not be finished yet, as there are active storm systems that are showing chances for more snow next week.

But whether it’s snow, sleet or ice, winter weather can create dangerous road conditions—so please avoid driving in these conditions unless absolutely necessary. And, if you must, be sure to slow down and leave plenty of distance between your vehicle and others. For more winter weather driving tips, click HERE.

Despite the snow, staff at the Parks & Recreation Office are already preparing for our summer programs, and they are looking for residents, ages 14 or 15, that are interested in becoming a junior counselor or counselor in training (CIT). This program helps them develop the skills they will need to become a future camp counselor. They are also looking for camp counselors and lifeguards. For information, contact the Parks & Recreation Office at (845) 359-6503, email recreation@orangetown.com, or check out their Facebook page HERE.

An important reminder to those of you who are 65 years or older, have a physical disability or are a veteran—you may be eligible for a partial tax exemption for the taxes on your primary residence. Please note that there are income limitations and applications are due to the Town Assessor by March 1, 2025. For information, contact the Assessor’s Office at (845) 359-5100 Ext. 5002.

Stay warm and enjoy the Super Bowl. May the best team win!

Regards,

Teresa M. Kenny

Keep Your Car's Safety Sensors Clean During Winter

As snow, ice, or salt grime gathers on cars in winter, many of the sensors that are key to the operation of advanced safety systems can become blocked and shut down—right when you may need them most.

Forward collision warning (FCW) and automatic emergency braking (AEB) systems are lifesaving features on newer cars that rely on a combination of cameras and radar sensors. The sensors are often mounted in the car’s grille, sometimes even in the car’s emblem or on its front bumpers. When these sensors can no longer tell what’s in front of them due to salt, snow, or ice build up on them, they can shut down or illuminate a warning light on the dash. When the sensors are obstructed and inoperable, the car safety systems aren’t working.

Don't forget to clear your windows and clean off your backup and side view cameras.  You the driver are ultimately in control of your vehicle and need to be able to see. Take the time before driving to clean off your windows, cameras and sensors to make sure you have full visibility.
