Jerry Laurence Retires as Park Day Organizer
"Well, after 32 Years, I have decided it's well past my time to retire from running Park Day. I have been saying for many years "This will be my last year". Now is the time... I am sure our Lions Club will come up with a new great fall event to replace Park Day. Something new, fresh, and probably on a smaller scale. But for me, I'm done. Not with Lions, just with Park Day. It's been a fantastic 32 years of running this community event. Park Day would not have been possible without the generous support of the countless businesses, volunteers, entertainers, organizations town departments and of course, all that came to enjoy the event. To you all, I say THANK YOU!"
As Jerry steps down, the Lions Club is looking for new members to help organize their events. We encourage you to join and continue the legacy of amazing community events like Park Day.

The West Bridgewater Lions usually meet the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month at Hardy's Pub on North Main Street.  Meet and Greet at 6:30 pm and the Meeting begins at 7pm We welcome you to join us and learn more about our Meetings are subject to change especially in the July & August. Historical Tidbit:
First Congregational Unitarian Church

The First Congregational Unitarian Church, located at 33 Howard St in West Bridgewater, is a significant historical structure built in 1801. Its Federal architectural style is symbolic of the period’s aesthetic, characterized by simplicity. Constructed with durable materials such as wood clapboard for the walls and cut granite for the foundation, the structure is a good example of the craftsmanship and the resources that were available in early 19th-century America. This church has served multiple purposes over the years, functioning as a church and a meeting house for community planning, politics, government, and religion. The building’s preservation highlights the community’s commitment to maintaining its historical and cultural heritage. The church’s existence and use underline its significance as a landmark of architectural and social importance in West Bridgewater.

WB Resident Shares Juneteenth Thoughts

As I prepare to celebrate Juneteenth, I cannot help but reflect on the evolution of this country and where we are today. As a member of Bridgewater Communities for Civil Rights (BCCR), I join others in drawing attention to the importance of individual civil rights and the ongoing efforts to ensure them. Juneteenth marks the date: June 19,1865, when all enslaved people were emancipated across the nation.

Certainly, there is still much to be corrected in a country that embraced the institution of slavery for more than two centuries. The large gap in wealth between white and Black American households reflects a history of discrimination and repression.

I like to think, however, that enough Americans care to correct the wrongs of this history. This can begin small, as when a handful of individuals work together to make a Juneteenth event take place in a relatively small community like Bridgewater. As a West Bridgewater resident who attended a previous Juneteenth event and began to reflect on what Juneteenth means to the African American community, I was drawn to helping out this year.

Those who attend this event are helping to right wrongs also, by participating in Juneteenth activities, absorbing the cultural traditions, and recognizing that Juneteenth is part of American history.

Speaking of festivities, there will be speakers, entertainment, vendors, and arts and crafts for children. We are hoping that the celebration of Juneteenth in Bridgewater will be shared by many.

By the way, a pre-Juneteenth event will be hosted by the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church, Bridgewater on June 16th at 2 pm. At this time, we can enjoy Gospel music and begin celebrating the freedom that Juneteenth symbolizes.

The Bird Serenade
Each morning, through my slightly open window, I wake to the bird serenade...

...a daily reminder of these delicate beings that share our earth...their songs both beautiful and powerful.

"A bird does not sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song."
~Chinese Proverb

"Birds sing after a storm; why shouldn’t people feel as free to delight in whatever remains to them?" ~ Rose Kennedy

"Keep a green tree in your heart and perhaps the singing bird will come." ~Lois Lowry

"Wakefulness is not a destination but a song the human heart keeps singing, the way birds keep singing at the first sign of light." ~Mark Nepo
They thrive in the shade trees, they soar through the open skies, they sing their morning song ... so small, so frail.. proving even the smallest can have a tremendous impact in this world; especially when there are many.
