Attendance Awareness Campaign Update

Mobilize Community Partners!

Attendance is higher when schools, families and community partners work together. Community partners can amplify your messaging and support your attendance efforts. We’ve seen that support from community partners—public agencies, health care providers, businesses, faith-based institutions and grassroots organizations—is vital when educators face very high chronic absence. These groups can address barriers like transportation or lack of access to health care, provide mentoring or tutoring and expand students’ learning and engagement opportunities.

Roton Middle School in CT recruited community partners to support its summer transition program for incoming 6th graders. Hear 8th grade teacher Dean Vaccaro describe the program during AAC webinar #2 Engage and Build Bridges in the Summer. Download the presentation slides.

Business or other local partners can provide incentives for contests. See our guidance and tips for incentives and recognition.

Community schools offer integrated student supports, or wraparound services, including family and community engagement, often through partnerships with local agencies. The Learning Policy Institute’s infographic and report help explain this model. AAC partners and nonprofits Communities in Schools and the Institute for Educational Leadership both offer educator supports for developing a community school.

Attendance tool spotlight

The Attendance Solutions Network is returning for the 2026-27 school year. Based at the Johns Hopkins Everyone Graduates Center, ASN provides districts with access to a range of supports through a series of events designed to address chronic absence and improve student engagement. This year ASN is expanding to include on-site community school coordinator or similar roles (i.e., family engagement, attendance coordinator, student support, success coach). There is no cost to join.

The Society for Public Health Education has a two-page handout with action steps to help educators develop productive community partnerships.

CASEL has developed a guide and rubric to help schools leverage strategic and aligned community partnerships that support social and emotional skill development, increase access to a range of community services, and expand professional learning opportunities.

Research

A new report from the American Enterprise Institute, From Attendance Crisis to Chronic Condition? Tracking Post-Pandemic Chronic Absenteeism into 2025, examines state attendance data through the 2024–25 school year. Although chronic absence has declined in most states reporting recent data, rates remain above pre-pandemic levels.

Do school-based interventions reduce chronic absenteeism? A report from the HEDCO Institute at the University of Oregon shares promising approaches to reduce chronic absence, including curriculum changes and better communication with parents. The report is based on a meta-analysis by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Chicago who synthesized findings from 49 studies of interventions.

Events

Join us and the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading on July 30, 12:30–2 pm ET, for A Tale of Two States: Reducing Chronic Absence, a CGLR webinar co-sponsored by Attendance Works, to hear how state leaders are expanding district-level progress and showing that reducing chronic absence is a shared goal in every region of the U.S.!

Parent Teacher Home Visits is offering an introductory conversation about its relationship-based home visit model. School and district leaders will learn how the approach can support regular attendance and improve educators’ connection to their work. Register for the July 28 session.

Professional Development

Our Professional Leadership Attendance Network (PLAN) is designed to support district leaders responsible for improving attendance systems. PLAN is not a program—it’s a leadership approach that helps districts move beyond isolated initiatives. The next cohort begins January 20, 2027. For more information, contact Lorri Hobson (Lorri@attendanceworks.org) and Zach Freeman (Zach@attendanceworks.org).

Registration for Fall 2026 national e-learning series is open! This three-part e-training offers educators proven tiered strategies that promote attendance and engagement using a team approach.
