| | Martha Redbone: Guardian Spirit - The Words of Bell Hooks! | |
Martha Redbone and longtime collaborator Aaron Whitby are developing a new multidisciplinary musical work celebrating the words and legacy of bell hooks.
The project, titled “Guardian Spirit: The Poetry of bell hooks,” is part of Apollo New Works and draws from hooks’ “Appalachian Elegy: Poetry and Place.” The work blends mountain spirituals, hollers, blues, old-time gospel, rock, soul, and funk, reflecting hooks’ Kentucky roots and the Appalachian heritage she shares with Redbone.
The open-studio performance will feature Redbone and Whitby’s ensemble of musicians and vocalists, along with video projections designed by Redbone and Attilio Rigotti. The piece is still in development, with a premiere planned for the 2026 to 2027 season.
Redbone says bell hooks changed her life, calling her “everywoman” and saying hooks helped her listen to “the whisperings of the guardian spirit.”
The project has received support from the Apollo Theater New Works program, the Estate of bell hooks, The bell hooks Institute at Berea College, and Kentucky arts and community leaders.

| | Pet Costume Contest Raises Awareness for Domestic Violence Survivors and their Pets! | |
A pet costume contest is putting a meaningful spotlight on an issue many families facing domestic violence know too well: pets are family, and their safety matters.
The free contest invites participants to show off their pet’s best costume while helping raise awareness about domestic violence and the importance of having safe options for animals when survivors seek help. Participants are encouraged to share their pet’s picture to spread the message that protecting pets can be an important part of protecting people.
For many survivors, concern for a pet’s safety can become a serious barrier to leaving an abusive situation. Emergency shelters may not always be able to accommodate animals, leaving survivors worried about what could happen to a beloved pet if they seek shelter. Research has found that many survivors delay leaving, or remain in unsafe situations, because they fear for the safety and well-being of their pets. Abusers may also threaten, harm, or use pets as a way to control or intimidate victims.
Sanctuary’s Pet Protection Program works to help remove that barrier by giving survivors options for their pets while they seek safety and support.
As part of Sanctuary’s Courage to Begin Again Capital Campaign, the organization’s new emergency shelter will include the Safe Paws Pet Park. The dedicated space is designed to help survivors maintain an important connection with their pets while staying at Sanctuary.
The Safe Paws Pet Park will provide a pet reunification and visitation area, giving survivors the chance to spend time with their animals during an incredibly difficult chapter. For those who have had to leave pets behind while seeking safety, that connection can offer comfort, reassurance, and a reminder that they are not alone.
Sanctuary’s campaign has raised $1.7 million toward its $2 million goal, bringing the vision for a safer and more secure emergency shelter closer to reality.
