The Cost of Holding Back

There's a moment in every sales conversation where hesitation creeps in.

A rep knows the question they should ask...but holds back.

And that moment costs more than they realize.

Here's what it really costs:

  • Wasted time on unqualified prospects
  • Missed chances to uncover urgency
  • Lower win rates from misaligned proposals
  • Loss of trust in their own instincts

Why does it happen?

Because self-doubt whispers:

"You're being pushy."

"You're asking too much."

"They'll say no if you press."

This isn't a script problem. It's a belief problem.

Try this with your team this week:

  • Role-play a discovery call. Have them pause where they usually hesitate.
  • Ask: "What are you afraid will happen if you say what you're really thinking?"
  • Rewrite the moment with a confident, curious question instead.

Example shift:

From: “So… um… what’s your timeline?”

To: “What happens if this problem isn’t addressed in the next 60 days?”

Small rewrites, grounded in belief, build trust and move deals forward.

Let them practice boldness in a safe space. That’s how confidence gets built.
