Dear Netherland-America,

Now that I started at the NAF a month ago, it's time for my first introduction in this newsletter. Hopefully, many more will follow- because what an incredible honor it is to fulfill this role for the NAF.

A year ago, I moved to New York with my husband and three kids, and we are happily living in Brooklyn. We are thoroughly enjoying everything that NY and the U.S. have to offer. But I also find it wonderful to stay connected with The Netherlands through the NAF.

In the short time that I have been working for the NAF, I've been very impressed by the organization. The more abstract concept of 'Bridging Worlds' is brought to life in so many wonderful ways and it is truly amazing and inspiring to see the tireless dedication of the many volunteers, the Board, and, not least, the amazing staff at our office in New York and beyond.

I look forward to working on the NAF's mission together and I hope to meet many of you soon at one of our fantastic events!

Happy Birthday, Ambassador J. William Middendorf II!

On September 22, Ambassador John William Middendorf II will celebrate his 100th birthday.

Amb. Middendorf II was the first chairman of the Netherlands–American Amity Trust (NAAT), an organization dedicated to an educational and cultural exchange between the Netherlands and the United States, founded in 1980.

The organization dissolved in 2004 becoming part of the NAF. In honor of Amb. Middendorf II's work between our two nations, every May at the Ambassadors' Awards Dinner, we present a worthy recipient with an award in his name.

To mark his centennial birthday he has asked for haiku submissions on his Facebook page.

An unforgettable summer in the Netherlands for 5 American interns

We look back on summer 2024 proud of the following participants in the NAF's USA2Holland Internship Grant! Congratulations to Brazil Bartholomew, Isabella Campa, Lorelei Goodall, Maria Infante-Pulido, and Alexis Sturm for finding internships with Dutch companies and navigating a new work culture on their own. With the NAF's support, they were able to lean into a transformational experience abroad without financial worry.

We're already looking ahead to summer 2025 internships! For any American students or universities interested, find out more about the USA2Holland Internship Grant here. The deadline to apply is December 1, 2024.

Brazil Bartholomew

Education: Pursuing graduate degree at Yale University

Internship: Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience

"My experience at the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience (NIN) was unparalleled both in the welcoming and kind nature of the people at the NIN and as a training experience for my career in science...From my experience receiving the NAF grant, as cliche as it might sound, I have really learned that the sky IS NOT the limit!"

Isabella Campa

Education: BS in Public Health from University of California, San Diego

Internship: KIT Royal Tropical Institute

"This program has helped my future personal and career plans because one of my personal goals was always to do an internship abroad and this program gave me that opportunity while providing funding making it a possibility for me, not having to worry about costs."

Alexis Sturm

Education: Pursuing BS in Mechanical Engineering at University of Florida

Internship: ATRO Medical

"This experience allowed me to become more confident as a person. Traveling to a new country alone is very intimidating but being able to see myself accomplish something like this has greatly improved my confidence. This past summer in the Netherlands has been the most amazing and life-changing experience."

Lorelei Goodall

Education: Pursuing BS in Chemical Engineering at Drexel University

Internship: Aachen-Maastricht Institute for Biobased Materials

"I feel like I was really able to immerse myself in my experience here without worrying about how I will support my financial needs. I will get published soon and I really don't think I would've been able to commit myself to the research I conducted without help from USA2Holland."

Maria Infante-Pulido

Education: BA in English from Florida State University

Internship: Leiden International Centre

"The USA2Holland program gave me an experience of a lifetime. Not only was I able to gain more experience in my career but do so on a global scale regardless of my financial background."

Shared Values

Drive Meets Drive

One shared value that connects the United States of America and the Kingdom of the Netherlands that may be less recognized is what I would like to call “drive”.

Drive in the sense of energy and determination to achieve things. Not only has this phenomenon been at the founding core of both nations, it also has been the driving force that has enabled the two peoples to come together and share those other values we discuss in this monthly column.

What are the dimensions of this “drive” to move to the unknown, is this drive still alive today and is it relevant for the mission of the NAF today. Read More
