Why Hybrid Backups Are Growing In Popularity
In the last edition of Tech Talk News, we discussed the need from backups in regards to cloud data. Sticking with the importance of backups, this edition will focus on cloud backups and why many organizations have begun adopting them.
In the traditional model of backups, onsite drives are swapped on a regular basis and it is these local devices that contain the backup data. This setup allows for restorations to take place far more quickly. The drawback is that these are physical devices that could fail and require a user to remember to swap drives.
Then there are cloud backups, which are sort of the opposite. While there isn't a device that someone needs to remember to swap, this process to backup and restore things can become significantly longer as they all require upload and download to the internet rather than writing to a directly connected device.
With a hybrid backup solution, you can have the best of both worlds. This solution allow for a simple onsite device that no one needs to remember to swap. It also has recent backups stored on it so that many restores can be made quickly and so that local devices don't get stuck in an extended backup that pulls resources from elsewhere. This local device then pushes data to the cloud, allowing for the retention of more versions online than might otherwise be possible on a smaller backup drive.
