The Healthy Habits Place

Throughout the year, the Y hosts events that help people stay active, build connections, and prioritize their wellbeing.

The upcoming event lineup spans a wide range of interests and age groups, including youth competitions, family camp outs, senior wellness programs, and of course, the YMCA Turkey Trot.

The YMCA also believes everyone should have access to wellness opportunities, regardless of financial circumstances. Through the Open Doors Financial Assistance program, individuals and families can receive support for memberships, camps, and programs.

What happens when public health systems are dismantled?

Diseases thrive when humans are most vulnerable, and there are two of high consequence in the news: hantavirus and Ebola. The hantavirus outbreak remains contained, with those that were in the Nebraska quarantine center required to stay there through the month of May. It’s now a waiting game to see if the outbreak grows. But unless you were a passenger on the ship where the virus was detected or were alerted by health officials of a contact, your personal risk is very low.

An Ebola outbreak is unfolding in Central Africa. This remains a very low risk to those in the U.S., but the World Health Organization (WHO) just declared it a public health emergency of international concern. Over 1,000 cases and nearly 300 deaths have been reported. There is no vaccine or treatment for this Ebola strain yet. [note cases/deaths updated]

The virus has been spreading for awhile, without detection and U.S. funding cuts to global health efforts almost certainly played a role. More from Dr. Jetelina.

Thanks for Supporting Us

Thank you to all for your contributions during Give to Lincoln May 1 through May 28.

Your support helped to fund our goal of providing bike training kits, helmets, and education to every Lincoln public and private elementary school to teach kids how to ride a bike.

Learning to ride a bike sets kids up for a lifetime of healthy activity, lowering the risk of chronic disease. Cycling helps kids to:

  • maintain a healthy weight
  • improve cardiovascular fitness
  • boost muscle development, flexibility, and strength
  • build strong bones and joint mobility, and
  • aids brain development.

Thank you again for your generosity and kindness!
