As we bid farewell to 2024, the Conservancy is now steaming full speed ahead in planning an extraordinary SS United States Experience – a state-of-the-art museum that will use advanced technology to help visitors explore and encounter the drama and majesty of America's Flagship. While we had hoped for our museum to be located aboard the refurbished vessel, a challenging court order earlier this year blocked these plans.
As shown in our initial museum rendering above, we plan to recreate a section of the ship's superstructure and incorporate the ship's iconic funnels, her original radar mast, and one of her five blade propellers into a unique land-based immersive experience. We thank world-renowned author and illustrator, David Macaulay, for developing this evocative rendering.
We will use advanced virtual reality and other innovative digital tools to augment our expansive collections of original artifacts and artwork to develop a thrilling "shipboard" journey. What visitor experiences would you like us to create? Traveling aboard the Big U in a North Atlantic hurricane? Dining at the Captain's Table with Marilyn Monroe, Salvador Dali, and Bob Hope? Joining Duke Ellington on stage in the Grand Ballroom? Assisting the engineering team during the ship's high speed trials? Stay tuned for future opportunities to help us create something truly extraordinary!
YOUR HELP IS CRITICAL
Your financial support is indispensable as we embark on planning and developing the SS United States Experience. We will unveil a full set of new Museum Patron benefits in early 2025, and all year-end 2024 contributors will be included on this "maiden voyage" roster.
