Welcome to the August 2026 Sea-gram

From MilaBooks.com

To our many Sea-gram subscribers, "Welcome back!"

I hope you enjoy your August issue. This month it's all about sea turtles!

Mama turtles made their nests and laid eggs (approximately 100 to a nest) about two months ago, and now they are hatching!

Will the hatchlings be boys or girls? It depends on the temperature of the nest. Cooler temps result in more males, while warmer temperatures produce more females.

The best way to remember all this? According to Cozumel sea turtle volunteer Patrick Crane, think of "Hot chicks and cool dudes!"

We hope you enjoy this Sea Turtle issue!

How The Process Starts!

A female loggerhead sea turtle approaches a beach in Cozumel after a long journey of many hundreds of miles, searching for a suitable place to climb ashore, make her nest, and lay her eggs.

This green sea turtle lays her eggs, covers the nest, and then drags herself back into the sea. Sea turtle volunteers use special lights invisible to the turtles.

Hatchlings Race To The Sea!

Sea turtle volunteers released the nest when it was ready, and the hatchlings raced to the sea before crabs, birds, and other predators catch and eat them.

Dangers Sea Turtles Face!

Only about 1 in 1,000 sea turtles make it to adulthood. These videos show the dangers they face,

many of which are man-made.

This video shows a baby sea turtle fighting through sargassum sea weed to reach the sea. Sargassum has exploded due to warming sea temperatures and runoff from fertilizers. However, floating sargassum provides protective habitat for turtles in the open ocean.

Even Adult Sea Turtles Are Not Safe!

These three videos illustrate the dangers

that adult sea turtles face:

Sea-gram contributor Tom Helmke sent us happy endings for these two adult sea turtles.

This first turtle was trapped in plastic trash!

Tom's second short video shows a sea turtle entangled in a discarded fising net.

Our underwater encounter in Cozumel, with an injured loggerhead sea turtle that survived a boat strike, was the inspration for "Larry Loggerhead Travels to the Sea Turtle Hospital."

Note the deep scar in "Larry's" carapace (shell).

Diving Milestones!

Martha Katz, owner of Scuba Network, Long Island, reached an amazing diving milestone:

Her 5,500th dive!

Details from Martha:

"The dive was in St Eustatius with 30 of my dive friends. The dive site was The Triple Wreck. The coral was amazing, as you can see! Full of color and fish.

The photo was taken with the SeaLife micro-3 camera and light."
