Hi!
On Thursday, October 29, we will host Guardianship & Alternatives for Older Adults: Decisions, Dignity & Choice at Kirkbrae Country Club in Lincoln.
When someone begins to need help with health decisions, finances, housing or safety, families often feel they have only one choice: guardianship. Sometimes guardianship is necessary. But it is a serious legal step, and it should never be treated as the automatic answer.
There may be other ways to support a person while protecting their independence and voice. Depending on the situation, that might include supported decision-making, a health care power of attorney, financial power of attorney, advance directives, representative payee services, or stronger community supports.
This conference is designed for the people who are often called when difficult situations arise: families, caregivers, attorneys, social workers, community health workers, healthcare providers, long-term-care professionals and advocates.
We will hear from experts on capacity and decision-making, supported decision-making, legal authority, probate-court perspectives, mental health, representative payees, volunteer guardianship, long-term-care rights and where RI can improve the current system.
We will also make time for practical case discussions—because these decisions do not happen in a textbook. They happen in homes, hospitals, nursing facilities and communities across Rhode Island.
My hope is that attendees leave with better questions, clearer resources and a stronger understanding that safety and dignity must go together.
The conference runs from 9:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m., with check-in beginning at 8:15
Registration is $75.
Attorneys can receive 7.5 MCLE credits; social-workers and community health workers 6.5 CEU hours.
Please visit the conference page for the agenda and registration information.
