June Update from the City Administrator
Happy June Gilroy! This month’s message focuses on upcoming summer opportunities for residents and neighbors. As Gilroy Unified School District (GUSD) completes the 2021-22 school year, it’s time to give the kids a break and the City offers numerous recreational opportunities for kids of all ages. Gilroy is a “Recreation Destination” and there is no better time of the year to take advantage of what Gilroy has to offer.

Summer Swim Program Returns

Last held in 2019, the City’s recreational swim program returns on June 14th. This popular program offers a chance to cool off at the Gilroy Christopher High School Aquatics Center with numerous swimming opportunities including group swimming lessons in the morning and late evenings with open swimming times in the afternoon. There are a few lessons still available so please check https://gilroy.theswimmingswan.com/ for a list of classes and open swim hours.

Unfortunately, the return of swimming at CHS does not include the re-opening of the water features, slides, and diving boards, but we expect that those amenities will be available in future offerings.

Youth Recreational Opportunities

Other youth summer recreational opportunities include numerous day camps that focus on sports, science, arts and culture, cooking, and many other youth enrichment activities. Please visit the City’s Recreation Division page at https://www.cityofgilroy.org/340/Recreation-Division to find an activity for your child this summer.

Gilroy as a Recreation Destination

Probably not as much fun as hanging out at the pool, but still focusing on recreation, I’ll be continuing the very popular Virtual Town Halls on June 22nd and will be discussing many of the City’s three recreational initiatives: Sharks Ice, Hecker Pass Gateway Tourism area, and the Gourmet Alley project.  This town hall will focus on recreation, but any topics are welcome for discussion.

You never have to wait for the next Town Hall to ask a question or voice a concern. Please feel free to contact me at jimmy.forbis@cityofgilroy.org and I’d be happy to answer any questions about anything “Gilroy”. As always complaints, concerns, and compliments are all welcome.

Lastly, your City Council will also be taking a summer break as the last Council meeting is scheduled for July 5th with Council on recess until August 1st. City offices will be open with normal hours.

Enjoy your City this summer – there is plenty to do!

Lane Closures Anticipated for Monday, June 13, 2022
To allow for street paving associated with the Glen Loma Development, the following locations will have lane closures in place on Monday, June 13:
  • Sirah Drive between Merlot Drive and Grenache Way
  • The intersection of Merlot Drive and Sirah Drive

Flaggers and detours will be in place. Please slow down and drive with caution in these areas.
Traffic Tip: Right Turn on Red
When turning right at a red traffic light:

  1. Right Red Arrow: Driver is PROHIBITED from making a right turn as long as the red arrow is displayed
  2. Red Circular Light: Driver should stop, yield to other traffic including pedestrians, and when clear, proceed to make a right turn

Intersection of First and Santa Teresa Boulevard:

We’ve received a few questions regarding turning north (right) onto Santa Teresa Boulevard from First Street. In this case, the light should be treated as the “Red Circular Light” example above. The Driver should stop before the stop bar, yield to other traffic and pedestrians, and then after making sure it is clear to make a right turn, make a right turn.
