Faithful Bridge Team Updates

Dear St. Alphonsus Catholic School Families,

“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” 1 Peter 4:10

The Faithful Bridge Team has taken this quote to heart this year. Each of us plan to use the gifts and skills we bring to the table to continue to move St. Alphonsus Catholic School forward and ensure we have a great 2023-2024 school year! As a reminder of our backgrounds:

Ms. Parey has 26 years of experience as a principal and teacher in Milwaukee Public Schools, and also spent 10 years working as a social worker with people with disabilities. She will apply her skills and experience to continue to enhance our school's overall climate and culture. Mrs. Bruhn has been a teacher for 23 years, spending ALL of those years in Catholic schools. She will apply her years of experience with teaching and curriculum to ensure our staff and students remain on track with standards.  Mrs. Schermetzler has been with St. Alphonsus for four years, but prior to that spent 10+ years in a top administrative & marketing role, building & managing functional administrative teams. She will use those skills alongside her knowledge of our school’s inner workings from both a staff and parent perspective to strengthen our administrative & operations functions.

The team has a few things we want to update you on this week:

First, we have created a single email address which you can use to get to all three of us at once: leadership@st-alphonsus.org. Please use this at any time to reach out to us with questions, concerns, or just to say hello. Note that while we will continue to check email on a daily basis throughout the weekends, we will only be responding to weekend emails through Friday night, and then again on Sundays. If your Saturday email is an emergency situation that needs immediate attention, please mark EMERGENCY in your subject line.

Second, we are very pleased to announce that we have hired a Middle School ELA Teacher. His name is Steve Silas and he will begin on October 2. We are going to let Steve introduce himself to you in a bio next week, but we are excited to share that he has great experience & passion for ELA & Literature, as well as theatre & creative writing. We cannot wait to welcome him to our staff. He will be stopping in next week to spend some time in the classroom with Mrs. Zierden as well as onboard with the leadership team.

Third, just some administrative reminders:

  • Mrs. Schermetzler is aware that many of you have had issues with PowerSchool/RevTrack fees and processing for various reasons. She is working through all of these and will get back to you individually as she problem solves.
  • Unity shirts are coming soon! We expect them to be delivered this coming week. Also, if you ordered an Out-Of-Uniform pass this year, those will go home in backpack mail on MONDAY.
  • STAR reading and math reports are coming home today in your child(ren)'s backpack. If you don't receive them or if you have any questions, please reach out to your child's homeroom teacher.

Lastly, we hope to see all of you at Pack the Church this weekend on Sunday, September 24 at the 9:00am Mass. All three of us will be in attendance and our students will even be lectoring & bringing up the gifts for the mass. If you've got St. Alphonsus gear, including past unity shirts, put them on and show them off! We'd love for the church to be packed with school families decked out in our stuff.

Thank you again for your kind words & prayers this week as we step into these new roles. St. Alphonsus would not be what it is without YOU. Have a great weekend and see you Sunday!

Very sincerely,

Mrs. Schermetzler, Mrs. Bruhn, & Ms. Parey

The Faithful Bridge Team

A Letter from Father Kevin

Dear Parents and Families,

Let me first thank you for your understanding and patience as we have journeyed through the past ten days and adjusted to Mr. Johnston’s rapid departure.

Let me also take a moment to thank our leadership team who have stepped up quickly and in a BIG way to help manage our school and even more to continue to move our school and its initiatives forward. We have been working together now for over a week and my confidence in their skills and abilities has only been growing! I am learning lots from working so closely with them, and I thank them for being willing to serve our students and families in this way. In order to maintain continuity in our initiatives and the excellent work of this team, they will be our school leadership until a permanent principal is hired.

You are no doubt wondering about the search for a new principal. One of the challenges of this situation is that we are not in the usual “season” for hiring a permanent school leader. A silver lining to this is that it allows us to go about this search methodically and not make a rushed decision. We will be posting the position soon, and a search committee will be formed to assist in the interview process for qualified candidates. There will be multiple rounds of interviews, and while more specific traits that we will be looking in a candidate will be flushed out at a later date, today I can tell you that we need a principal who possesses excellent communication skills, strong organizational ability, loves being a leader of teachers, and loves their students.

Some of you have asked the team how you can help the school. Here are a few ideas:

  • We are in need of additional adult team members for our after school care program (called Cougar Club). Please contact our Cougar Club coordinator, Stacey Pagac, for more information on this position.

  • We could use help in the school office for administrative tasks, answering phones, and aiding children & visitors who come to the office.

  • Since the pandemic, schools have been struggling to find substitute teachers, and St. Al's is no different. We could always use more substitute teachers on our list to call when one of our teachers is out.

  • We could also use more assistance in the area of recess and lunch monitoring (which helps take pressure off of our teaching staff).

If you are interested in any of these areas, please call the school office to inquire. Working in any of these capacities would require up-to-date Safeguarding certification.

Thank you for your continued prayers for our leadership team & our school!

God Bless,

Father Kevin McManaman

Fun Run: Thank You!

THANK YOU FOR HELPING US REACH OUR GOAL!

Congratulations St. Alphonsus School Families! You exceeded our goal for the Fun Run and raised over $28,000 this year! Thank you for your hard work to make this happen!

Mrs. Schermetzler is working out the details for camping out on the roof and the students are very excited for her to do this. More to come on that soon (and before the nights get too cold!).

THANK YOU SO MUCH AGAIN!

{pictured above: some second & third grade friends meeting Snowball the puppy who came to cheer the kids on!}

Greetings from the Art Studio!

The start of the year is always so fun! I love reviewing concepts, skills, and techniques with student artists. This year is no different. We are starting this year with an emphasis on Drawing- be on the lookout for students using materials in new ways (layering and blending oil pastels, graphite drawing pencils, colored pencils, drawing pens, and more!).

I wanted to give a quick note on Artsonia, a simple way for students to share their artwork with those important people in their lives… and maybe even create a gift or two! At the end of each project, I photograph their work and display it in our Artsonia Digital Gallery for St. Alphonsus School. It is only visible to me- unless you sign up and accept the invitation. If you did this last year, you do not need to sign up again! Those new to our school or new to Artsonia will have invitations coming home this week. If you missed it in backpack mail, please use the link and code below. Once you join, you are able to see all of the beautiful things created. You are also able to share the invite with those who may be interested (grandparents, Godparents, special people in their lives). The work is also able to be made into gifts, and the Art Studio receives a portion of the sale to buy more fun materials!

Please consider joining if you haven’t already done so!

In Kindness and Joy,

Mrs. Rebecca Hoeppner
