THANK YOU to all the volunteers who participated in our 3rd annual STEAM Fair! Our goal for building community and creating a sense of belonging for all at Gillespie Middle School has been and will always be one of our main priorities.

During this fun-filled, educational evening, we intentionally introduced different academic interests and career opportunities for underrepresented populations in the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) fields.

Your collaborative efforts are what make events like these possible and truly special. Thanks for making the Gillespie Middle School STEAM Fair a memorable and uplifting celebration of learning, creativity, and exploration.

To our Gillespie staff members, our PTO, MSCR, BSU, Born 2 Lead, Boys and Girls Club of Dane County, The Madison Reading Project, and The Willa Brown Aviation Academy, thank you for your time and dedication to our scholars and your contributions to making this event a huge success!

This Week is Lift Every Voice and Read Week!

This is a weeklong celebration of reading! Students will participate in many activities that focus on the importance of reading, the fun that reading can bring, and the different ways that reading appears in our everyday lives! Students will do a March Madness Style Bracket with poetry as a theme, engage in lessons based on books, and take some time daily to Drop Everything And Read (DEAR). The students and staff will also compete in a Spirit Day competition (see below)! There will be multiple opportunities for students to win gift cards for their participation in the activities. If you would like to donate a $5 or $10 gift card for Target or Walmart, please send it to school with your student addressed to Mrs. Alexander. We are also really excited for Tuesday when we will have a FREE Book Fair from the Madison Reading Project. Every student in the school will have the opportunity to browse and choose one book they can take home for free!

Student Spirit Days:

Monday: Hats off to Reading! Wear a hat.

Tuesday: Exercise Your Mind! Wear workout gear.

Wednesday: Reading Makes You Super! Dress like a superhero or wear a superhero t-shirt.

Thursday: Reading Opens Doors! Wear college gear

Friday: Cozy Up with a Good Book! Wear pajamas.

¡La próxima semana es la semana de Levantar Cada Voz y Leer! ¡Esta es una celebración de la lectura que dura una semana! ¡Los estudiantes participarán en muchas actividades que se centran en la importancia de la lectura, la diversión que puede traer y las diferentes formas en que la lectura aparece en nuestra vida diaria! Los estudiantes harán un grupo de estilo March Madness con poesía como tema, participarán en lecciones basadas en libros y se tomarán un tiempo todos los días para dejar todo y leer (DEAR). Los estudiantes y el personal también competirán en una competencia del Día del Espíritu (ver a continuación). Habrá múltiples oportunidades para que los estudiantes ganen tarjetas de regalo por su participación en las actividades. Si desea donar una tarjeta de regalo de $5 o $10 para Target o Walmart, envíela a la escuela con su estudiante dirigida a la Sra. Alexander. Last Friday we ended our month-long celebration of Black History with a community dinner and pop-up shop featuring black-owned businesses. We recognized our incredible students, heard a poem written and recited by one of our 6th graders, and saw our Grizzly Dancers perform. Coach Kira reminded our young people that they have the privilege and the responsibility to carry on the excellence of those who have come before them.

El viernes pasado terminamos nuestra celebración de un mes de la Historia Negra con una cena comunitaria y una tienda temporal con negocios de propietarios negros. Reconocimos a nuestros increíbles estudiantes, escuchamos un poema escrito y recitado por uno de nuestros alumnos de sexto grado y vimos a nuestros bailarines Grizzly Dancers actuar. Spring Updates:

Congratulations to the Grizzlies basketball team for winning the tournament this past Saturday!

Flag football starts April 1st for 7th and 8th graders. Students should see Ms. Hardy for forms.

Kickball will be available for all grades.

Gillespie, as a West Side team, will also hold a West Side-only dance for anybody who has participated in any MSCR activities this past year—details to follow.

MSCR after-school is a DROP-IN Program with clubs that do not run during lunch.
