Staying Put Office is Moving
65 Locust Avenue, First Floor
As you can imagine, there are many moving parts involved in relocating our office. To allow everything to be moved and set up as efficiently as possible, our office will be closed from Tuesday, July 28 through Friday, July 31. During this time, we will continue to provide essential transportation for medical appointments only. There will be no events held this week!
August coffees will be held at the old Staying Put office on

Hello from Kate
Moving stinks. The amount of accumulated stuff you have to toss out, donate, pack up is daunting. This should come as no surprise – we in fact, embody our name: Staying Put. Who wants to move? Not me. Who wants to unearth years of old brochures, holiday decorations, and tchotchke? I certainly don’t. And yet - as I sit here amongst barren walls and hollowed out drawers, I am deeply excited for this next step. Our new office at 65 Locust is an opportunity for all of us. Moving stinks, yes, but it gives us all the chance to feel a sense of renewal. A common mantra from my mother growing up was, “families are complicated, take what you liked, leave what you didn’t, and bring something new to the table”. I look at many of life’s transitions this way. We have been thoughtfully preparing for a move for years and this month will be a moment to bring all the good work with us, leave the cracked paint and stained carpets and make this new space a home for all of us. We thank you all so much for your patience, your support, and enthusiasm. We can’t wait to share the new space with you because it is for you. Yes, we are moving, but we are always Staying Put.

WHISTLER
Ann Patchett

Time falls away as they remember the choices they made and the choices that were made for them. “This beautiful and generous novel feels effortless, never straining for effect.
It’s one of Patchett’s best.” --Publishers Weekly starred review.

Keep Your Home Safe This Summer
New Canaan has experienced recent home and vehicle burglaries. It is important to be proactive to help prevent being victimized. While some burglaries occur through forced entries, many occur through unlocked doors or windows. The vast majority of stolen vehicles occur because the keys / fobs were left inside an unlocked vehicle.
Crime Prevention Tips for your Home:
- Always remember to lock all doors and windows, and keep your house and car keys either on your person or secure inside of your home.
- Keep the exterior lit up; motion-sensor lighting can be relatively inexpensive and is a deterrent for criminals.
- Consider motion-activated cameras; these can alert you remotely that someone is on your property.
- Keep bushes trimmed low and trees pruned to allow for visibility of your property to both neighbors and from the roadway.
- Consider an alarm system for your house’s entry points and windows.
- Get to know your neighbors and communicate with them; community surveillance and awareness is a great way to be alerted to unusual occurrences.
If you are going away, you can:
- Put a hold on your mail and delivery services
- Have the yard trimmed neatly
- Use timers for lighting
- Tell a trusted neighbor to watch for unusual activity
- Add your residence to the New Canaan Police Department’s Closed House List
Police Services:
-
Security Assessments: The New Canaan Police Department has Officers who are trained in the principles of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED). The Officers will evaluate a property’s exterior (and interior if requested) and make educated recommendations that can enhance safety and make the area a harder target for criminals. Many of the tips you receive are simple low-cost measures to help secure your property. To schedule a security assessment, you can call / text the Department’s Community Impact Officer, Roy Adams, at 203-989-6050.
-
Closed House List: The Department offers to residents who may be away from their New Canaan home for an extended period of time the opportunity to be placed on a Closed House List. Residences on the list are checked once a week by a uniformed police officer. Information on the list is kept confidential. Homeowners who are leaving their house unattended and wish to be placed on the Closed House List should call 203-594-3500 for further information.

Register for Emergency Notifications from the Town
All members of the New Canaan community are urged to register for the Town of New Canaan’s emergency notifications service if they are not already registered. The recent widespread internet and power outages provided another example of the value of being informed during local emergencies.
If you do not receive the emergency notifications currently, you may register for the service by going to the Town’s Emergency Alert Sign Up and complete the “Creating a New Account” feature on the Everbridge page. Participation in the system is not mandatory, though it is highly recommended so that the Town of New Canaan can reach you with public safety and other urgent messages by phone, text and / or email. There is no charge for the service.
The Everbridge platform enables the Town to alert residents and all community members about a variety of events ranging from severe weather, power outages, missing persons and other emergencies to more routine and targeted announcements, such as road closures, road repaving and utility maintenance on particular streets.
