Building Community, Trust, and Connection Through Appreciation:
UCSF School of Medicine Diversity Matters Orientation
| |
This year marks the 10-year anniversary of the Diversity Matters Orientation (DMO) portion of the UCSF School of Medicine medical student orientation. DMO is a two-day immersive experience for medical students during their first week of medical school. Through common readings, small group facilitated discussions, and guest speakers—including advanced medical students, faculty, and a patient—DMO develops the lifelong practice of strengthening the communication skills needed to build trust and community and connect across differences.
Taking Time for Research: UCSF Medical Students Deepen Research Expertise During Gap Years
Known for its strong research focus, the UCSF School of Medicine encourages students to explore research opportunities throughout their medical education. Gap years, often taken between the third and fourth year, are a popular time for students to delve into research projects. A significant portion of the Class of 2025 (24%) is currently taking a gap year, with 70% of these students pursuing research endeavors.
Additional time or training in research often is not a prerequisite for being a competitive residency training applicant, especially since students in the Bridges Curriculum have research opportunities through Summer Explore between the first and second years of medical school and Deep Explore during Career Launch. However, some students appreciate opportunities to extend training for more in-depth, full-time experiences.

Foundations 2 Clerkships Meet Key Milestone
Over the past six months, the Foundations 2 (F2) Clerkship directors and coordinators have streamlined and improved processes to ensure all grades are submitted on time and each student has completed and logged their core clinical experiences. This achievement showcases F2's commitment to maintaining the highest standards of medical education and ensures compliance with crucial accreditation standards. The dedication and hard work of our faculty, staff, and students have been instrumental in reaching this milestone.
As the School of Medicine approaches the upcoming 2026-2027 LCME accreditation review, the timely submission of grades and completion of clinical experiences by students are proof of the readiness and robustness of our educational programs.
