Insight from the Senior Academic and College Counselor
I am glad to be part of the ASMS family. I have been busy getting to know the senior students, assisting with scholarship and college applications, as well as looking into major/career paths.

Fall is a busy time for college recruitment. We will continue to have virtual and in-person recruiting sessions for the upcoming months. I highly encourage all students to meet with multiple recruiters, even if they are not from one of your top choice schools. Do not underestimate the potential scholarships, research options, internship opportunities, and great campus atmosphere some of the mid-size and smaller schools offer.

Seniors, the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is now available. Completing this form will determine if you qualify for grants, need-based scholarships, loans, and work-study to assist in paying for college. Beginning with the class of 2022, completing the FAFSA is a high school graduation requirement. A lot of the selective institutions are encouraging students to complete the FAFSA right away in order to qualify for certain scholarships. Feel free to contact me for assistance at adunklin@asms.net.

Student Updates and Opportunities
A Scholar in Her Honor
Rachel Dark was a student at ASMS who graduated in the Class of 2011. She was tragically killed in a car accident in 2017. Rachel's portrait will be on a float at the Rose Bowl parade this year in her memory. Her family will be completing the portrait at a special event on the ASMS campus in November. At the celebration event, Rachel's family wants to honor Rachel's life by giving a scholarship to a current ASMS senior.

If you would like to be considered for this scholarship, please complete this scholarship application by Friday, October 22 at 12:00 PM CST.

ASMS faculty host Pickleball Clinic on campus for students and staff!
On Tuesday, October 5th, faculty and students gathered in the gym for a Pickleball Clinic. ASMS Faculty members led the clinic to help encourage interest in the sport and to improve the foundational skills of novice players. The school has a permanent pickleball court on campus and the faculty and staff meet once a week to play. Hopefully, more students will become engaged in the sport.

German Puppet Theater is serious study at the 4th year level
and complex in terms of original language use.

Pictured: ASMS Senior Shrish Shetty and ASMS Senior Elbread Roh
"German puppet theater deserves a devoted place in the field of legitimate study in terms of its history, content and influence. Puppet theater’s historical development in Germany represents the larger evolution of Germany. From ancient times up to the present day, this artistic form of representation has enjoyed an audience in the German-speaking regions. The evolution of puppet theater parallels Germany’s quest for legitimacy as a nation and desire for cultural unification. A study of puppet theater thematizes the issue of popular cultural history. For most of its existence in Germany, puppet theater served as popular entertainment. The conception of folk art and folklore â€“ which includes puppet theater – by the German Romantics led them to believe that folk artists possessed a mysterious authenticity inaccessible to Classicists and their narrowly-defined world of high art. Much German literature and thought from the 19th century onward shows a fondness for the Volk aspect of puppet theater. Puppet theater and its reception in German Romanticism helped to shape literary and philosophical themes that would lead to further recognition of puppetry as an art form and an integral aspect of German culture."
