Remembering Two Beautiful

Lives Lost Too Soon

Remembering Barbara and Kaleb Deer

With Love, Honor, and Prayer

There are moments in life when words never feel strong enough to express the pain in our hearts. The passing of Barbara and Kaleb Deer is one of those moments.

I am deeply heartbroken by this tremendous loss. Barbara was not only a respected leader and advocate in our community, but she was also a kind, compassionate, and genuine person whose presence touched the lives of so many. She dedicated her life to helping others, uplifting families, supporting children, and strengthening communities throughout Cook County and beyond.

Barbara carried herself with grace, intelligence, and purpose. Whether through her work in education, healthcare advocacy, or community leadership, she always poured love into everything she did. She believed deeply in service, unity, culture, and making sure people felt seen, heard, and valued.

As a proud daughter of North Lawndale, Barbara represented the very best of our community. Her leadership, warmth, and unwavering commitment to others left a lasting mark that will never be forgotten.

The loss of her beloved son Kaleb alongside her passing makes this tragedy even more heartbreaking. My prayers remain with the Deer family, their loved ones, and everyone grieving during this incredibly difficult time. I know the pain of this loss will be felt throughout our communities for years to come.

Even in sorrow, I hope we continue to honor Barbara and Kaleb by showing love to one another, supporting our neighbors, and remembering the importance of community, compassion, and togetherness.

Barbara and Kaleb Deer will forever remain in our hearts, our prayers, and our memories.

Important SNAP Benefit Changes

Impacting Cook County Residents

Cook County families are facing growing food insecurity as new federal SNAP policy changes begin taking effect in 2026. Currently, more than 1.4 million residents across Cook County struggle with access to affordable food, while nearly 882,000 individuals rely on SNAP benefits for daily support.

New federal requirements may impact eligibility for many residents, including updated work-reporting rules and changes affecting immigrant households. Beginning this year, some recipients may need to complete at least 80 hours of work, volunteer service, or job training each month to maintain benefits.

Residents are encouraged to act now by checking exemption eligibility, exploring free workforce training through Job Ready Illinois, and utilizing local food assistance resources. Individuals needing immediate food support can call 2-1-1 or visit the Greater Chicago Food Depository for nearby pantry locations and benefits assistance.

Help is available, and Cook County remains committed to connecting residents with the resources they need during this transition.

Honoring Excellence in Legal Leadership

Celebrating Representation, Justice, and Community Impact

A few evenings ago, I had the distinct honor of attending a special Cook County Bar Association event recognizing Wiley Adams on his historic achievement as the 82nd President of the National Bar Association. The evening served as a powerful celebration of leadership, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to advancing justice and equity within the legal profession.

It was truly inspiring to stand alongside Chief Justice Neville, Shannon Washington, Wiley Adams’ proud mother and family, as well as Dominique Rogers, to commemorate this remarkable milestone. The gathering reflected not only President Adams’ extraordinary accomplishments, but also the collective progress being made toward greater representation and inclusivity in leadership spaces across the legal system.

Moments like these remind us why representation matters. They reinforce the importance of creating pathways for future generations of leaders while continuing the work necessary to ensure fairness, opportunity, and justice for all communities. President Adams’ leadership stands as a testament to what can be achieved through dedication, service, and a steadfast commitment to uplifting others.

Congratulations once again to President Wiley Adams on this well-deserved recognition. Your leadership, vision, and service continue to inspire communities across Cook County and beyond.

Building Stronger Leaders in Healthcare

On April 8th, Cook County Health proudly celebrated a meaningful milestone as graduates of the Frontline Leadership Program were honored for their dedication, perseverance, and unwavering commitment to service. The ceremony highlighted the continued investment in the individuals who serve as the backbone of our healthcare system, our frontline leaders. Their daily efforts not only support patients and families but also strengthen the overall health and well-being of communities throughout Cook County.

Since its launch in March 2023, the Frontline Leadership Program has played a critical role in preparing supervisors and emerging leaders with the skills necessary to thrive in today’s healthcare environment. Through comprehensive training focused on communication, emotional intelligence, conflict resolution, leadership development, and team management, participants are equipped with the tools needed to lead with confidence, compassion, and purpose.

These graduates now move forward empowered to inspire those around them, strengthen collaboration within their departments, and help create a more responsive and equitable healthcare system for all.

As they continue their leadership journeys, their impact will be felt not only within hospital walls, but throughout the communities they proudly serve. Their achievements stand as a reminder that when we invest in people, we invest in a healthier and stronger future for everyone.

Investing in South Shore’s Future Through Community Voices

Building a Stronger 71st Street Corridor Together

Touring South Shore and engaging directly with residents, business owners, and community stakeholders served as a powerful reminder of the importance of intentional and community-driven investment. Conversations surrounding the future of the 71st Street corridor highlighted not only the challenges facing the area, but also the tremendous opportunities for economic growth, revitalization, and long-term neighborhood stability.

Throughout the tour, residents shared their vision for a stronger and more vibrant South Shore, one where local businesses can thrive, families feel supported, and development reflects the culture, history, and pride of the community. These discussions reinforced the importance of ensuring that revitalization efforts remain inclusive, equitable, and rooted in the voices of the people who call South Shore home.

The future of the 71st Street corridor is about more than infrastructure and development, it is about creating sustainable opportunities that uplift the entire community. From supporting small businesses and encouraging new investments to improving public spaces and strengthening neighborhood resources, every conversation contributes to shaping a brighter future for generations to come.

The 3rd District remains committed to maintaining a strong presence in the community, listening to residents, and working collaboratively to ensure that growth benefits everyone. Bridging the Digital Divide for Seniors

Empowering Older Adults Through

Technology and Community Partnership

It was a true honor to join Dr. Kisha E. McCaskill and Michael Scott Jr. for a meaningful Senior Laptop Giveaway made possible through the incredible partnership between Hope TEC and Atos. This impactful initiative reflects a shared commitment to ensuring that seniors across our communities remain connected, informed, and empowered in today’s increasingly digital world.

A special thank you goes to Pastor Leslie Sanders and First Lady Julie Sanders for their unwavering leadership and dedication to uplifting the community. Through their efforts, critical resources were brought directly to residents, creating opportunities that extend far beyond the distribution of laptops. Seniors ages 55 and older not only received devices to help them stay connected with family, healthcare providers, and essential services, but they were also provided access to free computer classes designed to strengthen digital literacy, confidence, and independence.

Programs like this demonstrate the power of collaboration and the importance of investing in our senior population. Technology has become essential in nearly every aspect of daily life, from accessing healthcare and employment resources to communicating with loved ones and participating in civic engagement. By helping seniors build these skills, we are helping ensure they are not left behind in an ever-evolving digital landscape.

One recipient shared that receiving her laptop felt like “graduating,” a heartfelt moment that perfectly captured the significance of the event. Her words served as a powerful reminder that access to technology can open doors, restore confidence, and create new opportunities for lifelong learning and connection.

Together, through strong partnerships and community-centered initiatives, we continue working to close the digital divide and create a future where every resident, regardless of age, has the tools and support needed to thrive.
