According to the report, and based on Statistics Canada’s Raw Materials Price Index, the price of a number of common construction materials, including gravel and clay, have risen eight per cent since last summer.

Maple Reinders overcomes hurdles to turn old warehouse into storage facility

The transformation of an old warehouse into a new self-storage facility was not an easy task for the Maple Reinders team but after overcoming a number of challenges the project reached substantial completion earlier this year.

Vanguard Self Storage, located at 75 Newkirk Rd. in Richmond Hill, Ont., started out as a one-storey, 2,244-square-metre building with office space on a mezzanine at the front of the building. Construction was scheduled to begin in January 2021 and be completed by October but was delayed due to the government shutdown for the COVID-19 pandemic.

Skilled labour capacity holding back housing

Even under a best-case scenario, housing starts will fall well below the 2030 affordable supply targets in Ontario, B.C. and Quebec, although Alberta would be able to build to its needs, says Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).

This past June, CMHC released Canada’s Housing Supply Shortages: Estimating what is needed to solve Canada’s housing affordability crisis by 2030 (ESG 2030), which took initial steps to estimate how much additional housing supply is required to restore housing affordability by 2030.

Industry Perspectives Op-Ed: Meeting targets requires growing the mechanical contracting sector

Research shows that HVAC trades will be the most in demand across Canada between 2022 to 2050. Ensuring net-zero success requires guaranteeing their availability.

As governments and jurisdictions across Canada examine different strategies to address energy efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions reductions, the vertical infrastructure across the country is being looked at for its emissions-reducing potential.

Today, Canada’s built environment — more than 16 million dwellings and close to 500,000 commercial and public buildings — generates between 13 to 18 per cent of direct greenhouse gas emissions and represents the third-highest source of emissions in the country.

Celebrating World Mental Health Day by Highlighting Scott Construction

Every year on October 10th, we celebrate World Mental Health Day to raise awareness and mobilize efforts to support emotional and psychological well-being.

Historically, construction professionals have suffered from mental health related issues at a disproportionate rate. In fact, the construction industry ranks second highest in suicide rates among other major industries in the United States. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) speculates faraway jobsites that isolate workers from family and friends, high stress and a prevalence of substance and alcohol abuse in the industry are contributing factors that negatively impact mental health. Every year on October 10th, we celebrate World Mental Health Day to raise awareness and mobilize efforts to support emotional and psychological well-being.
