HOPE RANCH FIFA WORLD CUP COMPETITION HAS A WINNER!
|
|
Last month, Laguna's Hope Ranch campus was filled with excitement and cheers during the FIFA Soccer World Cup when the campus-wide predictions competition was in full swing!
Students, faculty, and staff members first tried to predict the outcome (winning team or tie) for each of the 48 games in the group stage. Next, participants were tasked with predicting the exact scores (not just the outcome) of the remaining games.
Congratulations to Sadie Johnson '23, the overall winner of the competition, who was awarded an official replica soccer jersey as her prize!

HUMANITIES FOUNDATIONS CLASS TAKES FIELD TRIP TO RUSSELL YOUNG'S ART STUDIO
|
|
This week, sophomores in the Humanities Research Program completed their Art Unit by visiting the Carpinteria studio of internationally acclaimed pop artist and alumni parent Russell Young. In the converted-hangar art studio, Young shared stories of his artistic journey and the life experiences, people, and projects that have shaped his career. He gave students a tour of his creative workspace, showed his current projects, and demoed a screen printing, submerging the students into his creative process.
He talked about growing up in a working-class city in “deary, dark” northern England and emphasized that he could never have dreamed of his life and career as an artist living in California, immersed in color, and traveling all over the world showing his art.
Young spoke with the students about the importance of “finding your passion and pursuing it relentlessly.” He also commented on the ever-changing landscape of the creative field, saying that “what you do in your life may be something that doesn’t yet exist or that you can’t yet imagine.”

LAGUNA BLANCA BOYS SOCCER WINS 8-2 AGAINST VILLANOVA PREP; 3-2 AGAINST SANTA CLARA
|
|
By Dennis Moran, Noozhawk Correspondent
The Laguna Blanca boys broke open a 2-2 tie early in the game with an onslaught of goals to beat Villanova Prep 8-2 in a Frontier League contest played at Dos Pueblos last Friday, January 13.
The game started at a fast pace, with Laguna Blanca’s Frankie Baron '23 scoring in the second minute. Villanova responded with a goal a few minutes later, and then Baylor Wilson '26 recaptured the Owls’ lead at 2-1 with a goal in the 14th minute.
Villanova responded again with an equalizer minutes later. Laguna’s Mason Berg '24 gave the Owls the lead for good with a goal in the 30th minute.
Laguna Blanca’s offensive pressure the rest of the way caused Villanova mistakes, while the Owls’ defense tightened up.
Laguna Blanca defender Gabriel Lea '24’s speed helped stop the Villanova attackers from getting through. Josh Hansen '24 and Eli Meisel '25 did a great job controlling the middle, giving Laguna time to plan their attack.
“Congratulations to the boys on a hard-fought game,” Owls coach Rick Rodriguez said. “I’m very proud of my team and my assistant coach, Juan Carlos Torres.”

Baylor Wilson '26 and Beckett Smythe '26 scored for the Owls against Santa Clara on Tuesday, January 17. Laguna improved to 4-0-1 in the Frontier League.
Wilson tallied two goals and Smthye had a goal and an assist, helping Laguna Blanca rally from a 1-0 halftime deficit. Senior Frankie Baron '23 also picked up an assist.
