Tazzarin North to Nunatsiavut

Tazzarin is Back Again

2000, Monday June 19, 2023

I am back with Tazzarin, once again.

I last wrote to you back in September, vowing to return to Newfoundland in 2023 to finish the voyage I had planned last year. I had left the boat near St. John's, Newfoundland for the long winter while I returned to Massachusetts to await spring, which comes late in Newfoundland.

This past Friday at dawn my brother, Bob, and I climbed into the front seats of my jam-packed Ford Escape and started the three day drive of over 1,400 miles, plus a ferry trip of 100 miles. we rushed up through Maine and New Brunswick, then down the full length of Nova Scotia and Cape Breton, ferry across the Cabot Strait, then from Port Aux Basques in southwest Newfoundland to the end of the Trans Canada Highway at St. John's.

We found Tazzarin where we left her, snug under a winter cover awaiting a new season of exploring to the north.

continued...

Our trip up felt like a mad rush, although I did my best to keep a cheery demeanor through long drives and while waiting to board the ferry to Newfoundland. I felt much better when we arrived and began removing the winter cover and wood frame. Tazzarin appeared to be in good shape. Bob rushed to paint the bottom while I dealt with other tasks. The cabin is a jumble with everything stored below for the winter.

We hope to have the boat ready to launch tomorrow. With luck, we may get the mast stepped before the end of the week. it is a do-it-yourself operation. I would never get it done without Bob's help!

So, what lies ahead, should you stick with me and read my emails for the next couple of months? More birds, whales, stunning fjords, dramatic coasts, smooth and stormy seas, wonderful sails, trials and tribulations and hundreds of icebergs between here and my hopeful farthest north into Labrador and the Inuit lands of Nunatsiavut. Maybe I will even try to explain my passion for making this voyage...

Please do follow along, it helps keep me going!

There are a couple more photos below, for fun.
