LOCAL NEWS & INFORMATION

Caldecott Tunnel Westbound State Route 24 (SR-24) - Overnight Closures of Bore #4

Nightly, Monday, May 4, 2026, through Wednesday, May 6, 2026

Caltrans will conduct overnight closures of Caldecott Tunnel Bore 4 on westbound State Route 24 (SR-24) in Alameda and Contra Costa counties. These overnight closures are being implemented to allow for tunnel washing, fire drill, and routine maintenance activities.

Overnight Bore #4 WB SR-24 Closure Details

·    Monday, May 4, 2026 from 10 PM to 4:30 AM

·    Tuesday, May 5, 2026 from 10 PM to 4:30 AM

·    Wednesday, May 6, 2026 - (Fire Drill) from 9:30 PM to 4:30 AM

For 24/7 traffic updates, follow 511.org.

Lafayette Reservoir Vehicle Closures

Lafayette Reservoir will be temporarily closed to vehicular traffic only on Wednesday, May 6, from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

During that time:

  1. No vehicles will be permitted into the park
  2. Pedestrians will still be able to access the park, and crews will guide visitors into the park when it is safe to do so
  3. EBMUD will provide advance notice through EBMUD Alerts, project signage, and other public-facing communications

What Visitors will Notice:

  1. A crane barge and other marine equipment on the water
  2. The outlet tower surrounded by scaffolding and work platforms
  3. Construction activity on the dam face and adjacent structures connected to the outlet system
  4. Increased weekday truck traffic
  5. Construction noise during regular work hours
  6. Temporary detours or changes to circulation within the park
  7. Reduced parking availability and active construction staging areas during peak activity periods
  8. Occasional delays of approximately 10 to 15 minutes for vehicles exiting the park

This period also marks the overlap of EBMUD’s Tower Safety Upgrade and Wastewater Collection System Improvements projects. With both projects active simultaneously through fall 2026, this is anticipated to be the peak construction footprint at Lafayette Reservoir.

Fishing, hiking, and first-come, first-served picnic use will remain open during construction, though visitors should expect changing conditions near the project site (construction noise and activity.)

What to Expect throughout May 2026

In addition to the Wednesday, May 6 vehicular closure, EBMUD currently anticipates two additional temporary morning closures to vehicular traffic of up to six hours in the coming weeks.

Currently, EBMUD expects morning vehicular closure:

• The week of May 11

• The week of May 18

EBMUD will provide exact dates once the construction schedules are confirmed. Park users will receive information through project communications, EBMUD Alerts, signage, and other public. Digital traffic signs will be in place near the park entrance throughout construction.

Upper Outlet Tower Demolition: Demolition of the upper portion of the tower scheduled to begin in June 2026.

Again, schedules, access conditions, and anticipated impacts may change as work progresses and field conditions evolve. EBMUD will continue to provide updates as key milestones, closures, or other notable visitor impacts are confirmed.

Project Background

Lafayette Reservoir is EBMUD property, and current activity at the site reflects both EBMUD’s Lafayette Reservoir Tower Safety Upgrade and the ongoing Wastewater Collection System Improvements Project.

The Tower Safety Upgrade is an infrastructure improvement project focused on the existing outlet tower and related reservoir facilities. The work is intended to improve safety, support long-term reliability, and maintain the continued function of critical water infrastructure at the site. Visible construction activity at the tower is now increasing and will continue through fall 2026.
