Estonian Foundation of Canada
2024 Annual Meeting of Members
|
|
“Eesti Sihtkapital Kanadas, Estonian Foundation of Canada, this year celebrates its 50th anniversary,” said Eva Varangu, President of Estonian Foundation of Canada, as she began her remarks at the recent EFC Annual Meeting of Members. “This really is a testament to our shared past, shared future, and our shared commitment to living and sharing our Estonian heritage.”
On May 14, 2024, at its 49th Annual Meeting of Members (AMM), President Eva Varangu welcomed members from across the country, including Vancouver, Alberta, Montreal, southern Ontario as well as a number of EFC scholarship recipients, special guests and representatives of organizations who receive EFC funding. The meeting of members took place at Tartu College and online via Zoom.

Varangu reminded that this year, as Estonian Canadians, we also commemorate 80 years since the Great Escape of 1944. The way we all ended up in Canada may vary, but what happened 80 years ago is one of the reasons EFC’s founding directors formed this charity in 1974. At the time, the Soviet government was demanding funds from those who fled Estonia be “returned” even as they illegally occupied Estonia. A registered charity provided a trusted, safe place to donate this community’s estates and other monies. EFC would be a financial support to the Estonian community across Canada.
Today, EFC is still a trusted charity. Since inception, more than 8 million dollars of much needed financial support has been disbursed to organizations across the country. Moreover, Russia continues to be the aggressor, with its war in Ukraine, including the real threat to its neighbours. This, said Varangu, only highlights the importance and relevance of our institutions outside Estonia, why we must remain vigilant, and that we should not become complacent about democracy.
The President shared that in 2023, EFC received requests for funding and provided financial support to close to 30 programs and events including children’s summer camps, language instruction, folk dance groups, choirs, festivals, art exhibitions and new initiatives across Canada. EFC also continued to offer scholarships to Estonian Canadians to help reduce the financial burden of post-secondary education and sponsored activities in support of elderly Estonians. By supporting places and activities where we can connect with each other, EFC is helping to ensure that everyone, including our children and our non-Estonian friends, know about Estonia, our history, culture, and why we remain vigilant.
