Lessons from the Olympic boxing controversy

“Fairness matters in sports. But it doesn’t exist in a vacuum, and journalistic coverage shouldn’t unquestioningly accept how it’s defined, regulated, and understood. Like any policies, decisions about how to regulate ‘fairness’ are social and political, vary across sports and regulatory bodies, and are rarely objective. The questions we ask — and the stories we tell — as an industry should reflect that.”

-- Trans Journalists Association, excerpt from “What's fair? What journalists can learn from the Olympic boxing controversy”

Hiring: How to find the right fit for your newsroom

“Our application form is designed not only to detect talent, but also to detect empathy. I think it is important to differentiate between only capturing talent and trying to identify people who are willing to collaborate. It makes no sense to think about collaborative journalism If we do not create a friendly environment.  Some questions have worked well for us, for example: What type of journalism do you want to do? What journalists or media outlets do you admire and why?”

-- Jordy Meléndez, director of Distintas Latitudes, excerpt from Global Investigative Journalism Network Q&A, “Young and inexperienced, talented and empathetic: How to train new reporters for collaborative investigations”
