If You Could Prevent A Child From Dying, Would You?
Greetings!

Recently, 12-year-old Torrance collapsed in sudden cardiac arrest and died while running laps during P.E. class because there was no cardiac emergency response plan that instructed staff to provide immediate intervention.

CPR certified staff who witnessed the event did not call 911, perform CPR or retrieve the school's automated external defibrillator (AED)—which can affect a survival rate of 90% when used in the first minute of collapse. In fact, staff were unaware the school even had an AED.
The family sued the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). The trial brief revealed that had there been a plan to respond and use the AED, Torrance could have survived to have his undetected heart condition surgically treated.

The LAUSD paid $9.5 million to Torrance's family. Sadly, this is one of countless stories of young hearts needlessly lost.
With 1 in 300 youth estimated to have a cardiac abnormality, SCA remains the leading cause of death on school campus and the #1 killer of student athletes.
And yet, there is no national standard for SCA prevention
wherever youth congregate.
That's why we need your help.
Our Get Charged Up! program provides free AEDs and accessories to schools and youth-serving organizations who take the time to implement a cardiac emergency response plan (CERP). The program educates communities to Call-Push-Shock in a cardiac emergency by teaching them to recognize and respond to sudden cardiac arrest.
With your support, here's what we've accomplished since 2017
Next year this program will cost $25,000 to execute...
...a fraction of what was paid to the family by a publicly funded entity in retribution for a tragedy that could’ve been prevented. And for which no amount of money will bring back their son.

Until SCA is addressed as a serious public health crisis, your donation to Get Charged Up! will enable us to honor those lost by modeling a better way to protect young hearts.
Please—be a changemaker with us—and together we can affect a better standard of care for our kids’ hearts.
What Program Participants Are Saying About Get Charged Up!

"The children are lucky, better protected (and possibly alive) due to your hard work.”

“This program was 100% supported by our administration and school nurse. Our school had wanted an AED for quite a while and your grant provided us with that opportunity.”

"Our local fire department was happy to have this emergency response team at school and have combined them to be part of the stop the bleed program."

"I did get push back from my principal that an emergency plan was already in place. She was shocked at how vague our supposed action plan actually was."

"Our school and staff were totally on board and ready to do whatever it took to better our school and the safety of our kids."
