This week I announced a murder charge against a defendant for a crime committed 31 years ago. Nadine Slade was only 15 years old when she was found naked and strangled in a Far Rockaway apartment in 1992. Though her case grew cold, it was not forgotten.
During a painstaking investigation by my office and the NYPD into this unsolved homicide, the New York City Medical Examiner’s office tested for DNA under the victim’s preserved fingernail clippings. The results linked the defendant to the crime.
For three decades, the defendant eluded justice. Thanks to the relentless work of my Cold Case Unit and our law enforcement partners, he is now charged and in custody.
To lose a loved one in such a horrific way causes unimaginable pain and not knowing who committed the crime compounds the suffering. In the end, we hope to achieve justice for Nadine and bring closure and some measure of solace to her bereaved family.
My Cold Case Unit will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to ensure accountability in the borough’s oldest and most challenging unsolved homicide cases.
My top priority will always be keeping you and your loved ones safe.
In Friendship,
Melinda Katz
