A Note from Andres

Hello Mason District!

October is winding down and so is our second annual Restaurant Week here in Mason District!

I have had the opportunity to sit down for meals with lots of county and local officials including Delegate Marcus Simon, Chairman Jeff McKay, and County Executive Bryan Hill. Playing host in our district and sharing our diversity and cuisines has been a great experience.

I would like to thank my staff, especially Hannah Frank, for their exceptional effort in helping putting this event together for everyone. It has taken months and has left me full of gratitude and eagerness for this event next year.

Here is what we have happening in and around Mason and what's to see in today's Mason Matters:

💧Third Annual Climate Action Conference

Last weekend, I joined my former colleague, Congressman James Walkinshaw, to speak at the third annual Climate Action Conference.

🎨 First Annual Mason District Art Festival

What a great day! A big thank you to the Mason District Arts Council for making the first Art Festival such a success.

🚶‍♀️New Crosswalk Ribbon Cutting

Being able to celebrate the opening of a new, much needed crosswalk was great -- especially one where I coordinated with the neighborhood to get it done.

📜 Board of Supervisors Meeting Review

Our board meeting of October 14th featured the highly important presentation of environmental recognition by the Board of Supervisors.

Thank you as always to all who make these moments possible. Your volunteering, participating, or simply showing up to support your neighbors is greatly appreciated and helps build a Mason District defined by connection, pride, and opportunity.

As always, please reach out to my office at Mason@fairfaxcounty.gov or at 703-256-7717 if we can be of service.

Sincerely,

Andres Jimenez

Restaurant Week

🍽️ Mason District Restaurant Week is Going on Now!

Mason District Restaurant Week has returned and is running from October 20–26 with this year’s theme: “Eat Around the World.” 🌍

Our week-long celebration is your chance to explore the incredible flavors of our community, support local businesses, and celebrate what makes our district so vibrant and diverse. Every dish tells a story, reflecting the many cultures and traditions that call our community home. I have taken the opportunity each day to connect with local officials about Mason District. So far I've eaten with:

There is still plenty of time to go out and enjoy! Restaurants across Mason District have joined in to offer discounts on selected items or even your entire meal.

For details and links to participating establishments, visit our Restaurant Week website. And be sure to keep an eye on our social media channels for special content and deal announcements, too. For now, get out there and enjoy some great food at great restaurants! 🍛

📚 Third Annual Climate Action Conference

Climate Action Conference: Protecting Waterways 🚣‍♀️

Last Saturday, October 18th, I had the pleasure of speaking at the Third Annual Climate Action Conference. The event was a wonderful opportunity to meet and discuss our regions work in fighting against climate change.

With a highlight on protecting waterways, I joined my friend Congressman James Walkinshaw in talking about my own experiences working in, and eventually leading, environmental efforts. In addition to Congressman Walkinshaw, we also had the pleasure of hearing from Anne-Marie Laura, the Director of Climate Policy from Ocean Conservancy. 🌊

As the acting-Chairperson of the Environmental Committee, it is an honor to continue to help carry on the efforts of this county and I encourage everyone to find ways to help and join the many groups and individuals who are seeking to improve our increasingly environmentally-conscious world. Also, let me again thank the staff of the Braddock District Office who have been working hard for the residents of their District. The event went off without a hitch and their efforts are appreciated!

🎉 First Mason District Art Festival

🎨Thank you for a great day

of Art appreciation! 🎭

On Saturday, October 11th the district and Annandale community joined me to enjoy a fantastic Saturday outside for the Mason District Arts Festival. The event, organized by the Mason District Arts Council was a great step in underscoring what many of you already know: Mason District is home to a thriving artistic community.

While the sun shone, and smiles abounded, audiences saw performances ranging from singing to tap dancing to acoustic music and more. Booths displaying sculpture, painting, photography, were hosted by the artists themselves, all just as eager to discuss their work as they were to sell to those lucky enough to take the art home.

A big thank you to all our sponsors: ArtsFairfax, Beanetics Coffee Roasters, Celebrate Fairfax, and my office. I'd also like to express my gratitude as always to the people at the ACCA Child Development Center, who are located at the Eileen Garnett Center. Their help was vital and much appreciated.

I cannot tell you all how proud I am to be a Mason Resident. We are already looking forward to future events next year and hope you’ll join us in celebrating our collective culture!

New Crosswalk and Flashing Beacon Ribbon-Cutting

🚸 Improving Pedestrian Safety in Mason District! ✂️

This week, I was excited to join community members and local officials for the ribbon cutting of a new, improved crosswalk and flashing pedestrian beacon on Edsall Road at Bren Mar Park: one of our district’s most daunting crossings.

This important safety upgrade features a pedestrian refuge and three poles -- including one in the protective median -- and will help drivers see pedestrians more clearly and make crossing safer for everyone.

Investments like this reflect our shared commitment to creating safer, more connected neighborhoods here in Mason District. Thank you to the residents of Bren Pointe, our transportation staff, and the Virginia Department of Transportation for helping make this project a reality and to Tri Pointe Homes whose proffer paid for the upgrade.

If you know of an area in the District where improvements would be helpful, reach out to Fairfax County Department of Transportation for information on the process! 👟

Board of Supervisors Meeting Review

A Busy BOS Meeting for Mason District

The October 14th Board of Supervisors Meeting allowed us to recognize our 2025 Environmental Excellence Award Winners as selected by the Environmental Quality Advisory Council (EQAC) for their work improving Fairfax County's Natural Environment through advocacy, volunteerism, innovation, and mentorship. Congratulations to the awardees:

We also celebrated Support your Local Chamber of Commerce Day. These advocates for local economies are vital to supporting the diversity of stores, restaurants, and businesses which make our communities livable. I was particularly pleased to recognize the efforts of the MOVE Chamber, the Crossroads and Corners Coalition, along with the Annandale Chamber of Commerce

In addition, a couple key items affecting Mason District were discussed:

  • The Board voted to advance a public hearing in November on property acquisition needed for pedestrian improvements along Columbia Pike—a project aimed at enhancing safety and walkability for residents and visitors.
  • In addition, the County shared updates on new planning efforts to reimagine public spaces across Fairfax, including opportunities to create more accessible and community-focused areas. This will hopefully continue the efforts already begun here in Mason District.

As a Board, we recognized October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month with stirring representation from the members of the Council to End Domestic Violence. Their work has highlighted the importance of building healthy relationships and I was pleased to meet some of the Mason residents volunteering in the organization.

If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, please call the county's Domestic and Sexual Violence 24-Hour Hotline at 703-360-7273.

I will be excited to join my colleagues at our next Board Meeting on Tuesday, October 28th to continue our commitment to improving infrastructure, connectivity, and quality of life in Mason District and beyond!

Public Safety: Traffic Enforcement

🚨 Fairfax County Police Department’s 2025 Road Shark Campaign

The Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD), in partnership with the Virginia State Police, concluded its 2025 “Road Shark” campaign, a high-visibility traffic safety initiative aimed at reducing dangerous driving behaviors across the county.

This program included nearly 50,000 Citations and Warnings across five "waves" and hundreds of arrests for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI), reckless driving, and unlawful use of handheld devices while driving.

As the campaign concludes, I echo the Fairfax County Police Department in reminding all drivers to plan ahead, stay focused behind the wheel, obey posted speed limits, and never drive under the influence.

For further updates on traffic safety initiatives and enforcement efforts, follow the FCPD on X, Facebook, and Instagram.

Vacuum Leaf Collection

Vacuum Leaf Collection Update

Autumn is here and leaves will begin dropping soon! After fighting to save the Vacuum Leaf Collection Program I was pleased with the efforts staff made to improve it!

They reviewed these changed with residents at both the in-person meeting here at the Mason Governmental Center on Saturday, September 6th, and online on Wednesday, September 10th. Information by Department Staff on those changes are available both on the leaf collection website and for residents to review in this short video.

For those interested in pickup dates:

  • View the online Schedule & Status to search by street name.
  • Look for bright yellow signs in participating neighborhoods and scan the QR code to visit the webpage.

We also advise residents to sign up for Vacuum Leaf Updates, here!

Community Drives and Programs

Giving Back

🐾 Supporting Our Furry Friends

In these uncertain times, food insecurity doesn’t just affect our friends, neighbors, and family members — it can also affect our pets. That’s why I’m proud to share the work of the newly formed Mason District Animal Welfare Alliance, led by Holly Hazard and other dedicated community members here in Mason District.

One of the Alliance’s first projects is a pet food pantry to ensure our furry friends don’t go hungry. Food collection bins are now set up at three convenient locations:

  • Playful Pack (Barcroft Plaza Shopping Center)
  • Columbia Pike Animal Hospital
  • Mason District Government Center

If you’re able, please consider supporting this effort by donating unopened wet or dry pet food at one of these locations. Together, we can make a real difference for families and their pets across Mason District.

📚 Supporting All Ages Read Together (AART)!

Early learning builds the foundation for lifelong success and All Ages Read Together (AART) is making that possible for children across our community.

The Teachers and Assistants in their classrooms offer free preschool classes to help ensure that every child—regardless of background—has access to quality early education, literacy skills, and a strong start in school.

This is the spirit of giving back, equity and opportunity that strengthens our entire community and exactly what we hope to foster here in Mason District. We’re eager to see their work expand and success in their mission to help every child learn, grow, and thrive! 💙✨

🌟A Visit to Easterseals🌟

I recently had the chance to visit the Easterseals DC MD VA Child Development Center in Falls Church. On my visit I was impressed to learn that while only 10% of early education centers in the country earn accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), Mason families have one such center in their backyard.

Their team at Hunton Road is dedicated to helping children and adults with disabilities reach their full potential. The Center accepts infants through Pre-K-age children and has slots available for all age groups.

Easterseals serves families and children regardless of their income, race, or disability and participates in the Virginia Department of Education Child Care Subsidy Program and Military Child Care Fee Assistance.

For more information on enrollment, call (703) 534-5353 or visit the website. Thank you to the Staff and to 💙

Volunteers Needed!

The disAbility Law Center of Virginia is looking for volunteers for two projects:

First, they are asking for those willing to survey polling places for accessibility. If you are willing to help, fill out the form here!

Also, their Rights & Resources Summit is taking place on Thursday, November 13th and they are seeking volunteers to help moderate their virtual presentation sessions.

Moderators play a key role in keeping the event running smoothly by introducing speakers, monitoring chat for audience questions, and helping speakers stay within time limits. If you'd like to help, contact their office at: info@dlcv.org

Also, be on the lookout for details on our Mason District Disability Virtual Forum taking place on Zoom on November 20th. We'll have details about this important event for all residents in future editions!
