In Case You Missed It

by Father Casey

At Annual Meeting this past Sunday, I shared about two major events in our church’s life. In case you missed it, I want to hit the highlights, as this affects everyone.

The first big thing you need to know is that we’ll begin renovating the church and sacristy in April. This the biggest and most complicated of all the projects associated with the Transfiguring Our Foundations campaign, and the work will include replacing old electrical systems, improving lighting and sound, repairing ductwork, replacing the pews, transforming the south transept into a side chapel, and totally renovating the sacristy from top to bottom. We’re even going to put in a wheelchair ramp to the chancel. Our last Sunday in the church will be the Second Sunday of Easter, April 7, and we hope to return sometime around Thanksgiving.

During those months we’ll be worshipping in Roper Hall. The staff and I, with the input of dozens of lay leaders, are already planning ways to foster beauty and reverence in that large, versatile room. We will offer our very best – we always do – but it will be different. So, I’m asking you to choose to see this as an adventure. Embracing these months with a patient and resilient attitude will help us not just endure, but actually grow as a community. These six months will be a chance for us to remember how God is with us everywhere we are gathered, and the holiness of our worship emanates from...

This Weekend

Vestry on Retreat

The Annual Vestry Retreat is taking place February 9 - 11. All Vestry Members, Clergy, and a significant portion of Church Staff will spend the weekend planning, praying, and building stronger bonds to lead our community over the coming year. Please keep them in your prayers. Also note that the Church Offices will be closed beginning at Noon on Friday, February 9.

Gather After The Table

A reminder that our monthly gathering following The Table will be this Saturday. Please plan to take a few minutes to join us for light refreshments and some time visiting with your others of your Fig Family.

Parish Nurses Health Screenings

Our regular Health Screenings for the first weekend of the month is this Saturday and Sunday, February 10 & 11. Our Parish Nurses will be available before and after services adjacent to the Labyrinth providing blood pressure check and consultation.

Peace Post Next Sunday

This Sunday, February 11, we'll gather to write short notes to our elected officials regarding (among other issues): enabling a ceasefire to allow humanitarian aid to flow into Gaza; defending the right in our country to apply for asylum; and opposing US financial support of the despotic and cruel administration of the Philippines. We'll be writing in the parish office from 10:00am until 1:30pm, and we hope you'll join us!

Meet & Greet Breakfast For Young Families

Families with young children are invited to a breakfast in the Parlor this Sunday, February 11 from 8:15am - 9:00am. We have been blessed to welcome many new families with children in recent months, and we want to help folks get to know one another and feel more at home at the Fig. This will also be a good way to connect with Figs with Kids, our wider ministry for families with school-aged children, which regularly meets for formation and fellowship. Childcare will be provided.

Food & Faith

This Lent at Transfiguration, we will be exploring how eating, something we do almost without thinking about it, is an act of discipleship. At Wednesday evening programs and Sunday morning Bible studies, we will discuss how our choices around food are related to abundance and scarcity, justice and equality, piety and hospitality. We hope you will join us around the table as we all strive to be better “companions” (ones who share bread) of one another and servants of God.

Food & Faith

Bible Study

Adult Sunday School during the season of Lent will be a series of five small-group Bible Studies. Please come and join one of the four rooms, all of which will cover the same material, and discuss how food and hospitality are woven into the stories of creation, sin, redemption, and salvation.

Wednesday Evening Program: Food & Faith

Please join us in Roper Hall on Wednesdays for a series of presentations on the ways in which what we eat, what we believe, and how we act inform one another. These sessions will be led by the clergy along with special guests including the Rev. Melody Shobe, local activist the Rev. Dr. Yvette Blair-Lavallis, and baker/author/theologian Kendall Vanderslice.

Children's FaithFULL Lenten Program

Children ages Kinder through 5th Grade are invited to join in on our congregational reflection on food as we eat our way through Lent. Your child may come to one or all the sessions and will meet Wednesdays in Lent at 7:15pm in room S203.

Mexico Pilgrimage 2025

Join pilgrims from Transfiguration on a journey to the mountains of Mexico in 2025 to witness one of nature’s true wonders: the vast overwintering monarch butterfly colony. Led by Fr. Casey, this pilgrimage is tentatively scheduled for February 19-25 and will feature visits to three different parks in the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Preserve, engagement with local culture and people, and a visit to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City. The cost is $1,800 plus airfare. Most of the trip occurs at/above 8,000 ft of elevation, including hikes of several miles, so participants must be in very good health. If you have further questions, please contact Fr. Casey.
