Archbishop Wood receives $125,000 gift from the McDermott Family!

This extraordinary gift is more than a financial investment—it is an

investment in the young men and women who call Archbishop Wood home and the opportunity for more students to experience a Wood education.

Through their generosity, Buzz and Kathy are helping make an

Archbishop Wood education more accessible to deserving students while

strengthening the future of our school community.

Buzz and Kathy, proud members of the Class of 1977, know firsthand the lasting impact of an Archbishop Wood education, and now they are paying that experience forward by helping provide future Vikings with the opportunity to learn, lead, serve, and live with character.

We are deeply grateful to Buzz and Kathy for their incredible

generosity and commitment to Archbishop Wood.

Thank you, Buzz and Kathy, for believing in our students, investing in

their futures, and helping ensure that the Wood tradition continues

for generations to come.

Alumni Spotlight!

School alumni from the Class of 1990 may fondly remember the sweet, captivating sounds of Darlene Miller, nee Campbell, through her rich mezzo-soprano voice combined with her own classical stylings at the piano. Thanks to the strong encouragement and guidance of former Vice Principal Sister Rose Christine and other faculty members, Darlene became a fixed staple within school talent shows, the music liturgy group and prominent student Masses.

Archbishop Wood Receives Brooks Future Run Team Grant!

We are proud to share that Archbishop Wood High School’s Cross Country & Track & Field program has received a Brooks Future Run Team Grant!

The Future Run Team Grants help ensure that athletes have the gear and resources they need to arrive at the starting line ready to compete. Through this grant, Archbishop Wood has received Brooks running shoes and apparel for our Cross Country student-athletes, along with $1,000 in financial support to help with program expenses, including meet entry fees, transportation, and other team costs.

This generous support helps remove barriers for our student-athletes and allows them to focus on what matters most—training, competing, building confidence, and being part of a team.

A Special Thank You

We would also like to extend a special thank you to Gary Martin`22 for taking the initiative to apply for this grant and for working closely with Cross Country Coach Ed Clark`75 to make this opportunity possible for our athletes.

Their commitment and teamwork helped bring this valuable resource to Archbishop Wood and our student-athletes.

We are grateful to Brooks Running for investing in high school athletes and supporting our Vikings!

Congratulations to our Cross Country & Track & Field athletes! We can't wait to see you at the starting line in your new Brooks gear!

1974 City Championship Celebration

On September 18th, Archbishop Wood honored the 1974 City Championship team at halftime of our game against Conwell Egan.

They went 9-3-1, capping off their season with a 20-8 victory over Central in-front of a large crowd at Veteran’s Stadium!

Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate this historic team!

We are looking for enthusiastic Archbishop Wood alumni to help us prepare the next generation of students for the "real world!"

On November 18th, we are hosting a hands-on, interactive event called a Financial Reality Fair right here at Wood.

We want our alumni to be the driving force behind it.

What is a Financial Reality Fair?

It is a fast-paced simulation where students get a real taste of adult

budgeting. Students are assigned a career and a starting salary. They

must walk around to various booths to make adult choices—renting an apartment, buying a car, paying for insurance, and handling unexpected financial emergencies without going broke.

How you will help:

You will staff our interactive lifestyle booths, acting as the "adult

world." You might play the role of a car salesperson pushing a flashy

sports car, a landlord explaining rent, or a financial counselor

helping a student figure out how to cut back on luxury items to

balance their budget before the simulation ends.

It is a high-energy, incredibly rewarding morning where you can

reconnect with fellow alumni and directly impact current Wood

students.

The Little Sisters of the Poor Gala

On September 27th, we had the special opportunity to celebrate a beautiful piece of our namesake’s legacy and honor the Church of Philadelphia at The Little Sisters of the Poor Gala

Archbishop James Wood played an important role in bringing the Little Sisters of the Poor to Philadelphia, answering a call to care for the elderly and those most in need. His commitment to serving the poor and vulnerable became an important part of the Catholic tradition in Philadelphia — a legacy of faith, compassion and service that continues today.

It was especially meaningful for our students to be present and learn more about the good work Archbishop Wood helped make possible. Student Council President Antonio Propato shared the story of Archbishop Wood and his dedication to serving others, bringing our school’s history to life for all who attended.

As a school community, we are proud to carry the name of Archbishop Wood and to continue teaching our students that leadership is not simply about achievement — it is about faith, service and making a difference in the lives of others.

A very special thank-you to John and Bernadette Heenan and Cinda and Ralph Hall for making it possible for our students to attend this meaningful celebration.
