COLUMBUS DAY
Columbus Day on the second Monday in October is observed in the United States each year. The day signifies Christopher Columbus’ arrival to America on October 12, 1492.
Christopher Columbus was long given credit for discovering North America. However, long before Columbus was born (1451-1506), Leif Erikson landed on these shores. The Italian-born explorer did sail across the Atlantic, though, and more than once. In fact, he made four transatlantic voyages. His first was in 1492. Hence the rhyme, "In 1492, Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue."
During the 1492 expedition, Columbus was looking for Asia. He and his crew landed their three ships somewhere near the modern-day Bahamas. While he may not have discovered an already populated continent, he did spur further exploration and colonization of North America.

NATIVE AMERICAN DAY
Native American Day, observed annually on the second Monday in October, celebrates the cultures and contributions of the many Native American tribes.
While it is not celebrated in all 50 states, it is recognized in both California and South Dakota and gaining popularity in the rest of the nation. In other parts of the country, Indigenous Peoples' Day celebrations occur on this day. Events such as traditional dances, art displays and ceremonies have begun to replace Columbus Day practices.
The observance focuses on celebrating the culture, heritage, and history of tribes across the nation. Each diverse nation carries its own traditions, rituals, and beliefs. The day celebrates their knowledge, contributions and enriching heritage. It's also a reminder of their enduring legacy of strength, energy, and fortitude.

"Party" serves as the modern equivalent of the word "carouse," encapsulating the essence of lively social gatherings characterized by music, dancing, and revelry. While "carouse" evokes images of boisterous celebrations often associated with drinking, "party" has evolved to encompass a wider range of festivities, from intimate get-togethers to grand events. In today's context, parties can be themed, casual, or formal, appealing to diverse tastes and preferences. They provide a space for connection, enjoyment, and expression, reflecting contemporary social dynamics where people come together to celebrate milestones, foster relationships, and create unforgettable memories in a vibrant atmosphere. | | | |

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Exclusive Press/Media Sneak Peek: "Wasted: Overtourism & the French Quarter"
New Orleans, LA – – VCPORA (Vieux Carré Property Owners, Residents, and Associates),
in partnership with acclaimed filmmaker Laura Cayouette, is proud to present an exclusive sneak peek
screening of the upcoming feature-length documentary, "Wasted: Overtourism & the French Quarter." This
highly anticipated film delves into the complex phenomenon of overtourism in New Orleans' iconic French
Quarter, offering an eye-opening examination of the area’s over-reliance on the tourism industry and the quest
for a sustainable balance.
Wasted was recently accepted by the prestigious Big Syn International Film Festival, a sustainability film
festival in London that aims to inspire people to act on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Media and press attendees will be treated to a first look at a powerful narrative that focuses on the post-
pandemic reality of the French Quarter, as well as strategies for fostering economic diversification, preserving
cultural authenticity, and reinvigorating local residency.
Media Screening Details:
• Date: Monday, October 14
th
, 2024
• Time: Doors open at 3:30 pm, screening begins at 4:00 pm and will be followed by a Q&A session with
the filmmaker and selected interviewees
• Location: Historic New Orleans Collection William’s Research Center, 410 Chartres Street
• Reserve your seat: Email info@vcpora.org
• Additional media inquiries: ErinHolmes@vcpora.org
About the Film:
Four years in the making, "Wasted" shines a light on New Orleans' fragile balance between residents and
visitors in a post-COVID world. Through intimate interviews with French Quarter residents, business owners,
and culture bearers, the documentary explores the benefits and harms imposed by unbridled visitor numbers on
the 300-year-old neighborhood.
"Overtourism isn't just a buzzword," says Cayouette, best known for her role as Lara Lee Candie-Fitzwilly in the
locally filmed Django Unchained. "It's a reality that communities across the world are grappling with, and
nowhere is this more evident than in the French Quarter. We need to find a way forward that doesn't sacrifice
our culture for short-term gain."
Featuring interviews with Derrick Tabb, Harry Shearer, Dianne Honoré, and other local historians and
culture bearers, the film aims to spark conversation around the growing global discourse on Sustainable
Tourism and the urgent need for action. This sneak peek is in advance of the film’s premiere at 6:30 p.m.
Tuesday, October 22

at Le Petit Theatre, 616 St. Philip Street in the French Quarter. Tickets for the general

Zombie Paintball Returns to NOLA Motorsports Park in Avondale
07:00 October 04, 2024
By: Charles Andre Blanchard
Celebrate the Spooky Season
Beginning October 10 and extending until November 2, attendees to Zombie Paintball can celebrate the Halloween season with a monstrous bang (and potentially satisfy their need for speed).
Festivities
This popular seasonal activity once again returns to the premier racing facility in Avondale, this time with an enhanced festival area and zombie-hunting scenes, courtesy of their new partnership with Mardi Gras Productions. The 20-minute experience includes a bus ride to designated target stations, where riders will test their accuracy and try to defeat all the zombie enemies. They are also given a chance to reload their guns and go back through the stations before finishing.
Guests can also explore nearby festivities to celebrate the Halloween season. Food trucks will be present, along with stations for pumpkin carving and face painting. Local craft vendors and more themed-attractions make this a great family-friendly stop this Halloween. For the adults, drink specials will also be offered on several days.
NOTE: The only targets are the zombies. Attendees will not be harmed or shot at. However, children under 12 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.
Pricing & Packages
General admission begins at $22 per person and includes a rental paintball gun and 150 rounds of ammo.
For $45, Guests can purchase the Zombie Paintball + Karting package, which includes the aforementioned rental gun and ammo but also an added go-kart session on the NOLA Motorsports track.
Have a large group? NOLA Motorsports also offers a $650 party package. With this, up to 28 people can skip the line and each receive a commemorative bandana before boarding a private bus and being given the accompanying rental guns and ammo.
For tickets, visit the NOLA Motorsports Park's box office or their website.
Hours & Dates of Operation
The attraction will be open from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on the following days:
- Oct. 10 - 12
- Oct. 17 - 19
- Oct. 24 - 27

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon, October 14
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

NATIONAL DESSERT DAY
People around the country indulge every October 14 on National Dessert Day! Celebrated by way of the local bakery, grandma's house or chocolate shop, desserts include candies, pies, ice cream, fruits, cookies, pastries, cobblers, and donuts, too.
The available ingredients affect the range of desserts made in each region. The very first desserts required minimal effort or preparation since ancient cultures were more focused on the nutrition in foods to survive. Over the years, desserts have changed from natural candies and nuts to complex soufflés and multi-layered cakes. In modern culture, there are many more options available in desserts.
Throughout the year, we see seasonal delights. As we near the holiday season, the flavors change. For some, the taste of gingerbread or fruitcake may come to mind. Others will pull out recipes handed down for generations. Pecan, pumpkin, and apple pies come to mind. Other rich desserts round out the dessert table, too. Flan, tarts, and everything with maple glaze.

Who said, "You had me at 'hello'"? 10 movie quotes that made history
Published on October 14, 2024

Movies give us so much: unforgettable scenes, legendary performances, and even timeless songs. But what defines a movie's place in history are its iconic quotes. Every classic has that line that sticks with the audience, becoming a solid part of pop culture and replicating itself in unimaginable ways. Join us in remembering these 10 movie quotes that still live in our minds and hearts!
1"Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn" - Gone with the Wind (1939)
Credit: Auke Bakker
When discussing classics, Gone with the Wind (1939) is a must. It is one of the most iconic films in the history of cinema, and for good reason.
It was the actor Clark Gable in the role of Rhett Butler who delivered the famous line that many of us remember: "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn."
The quote made a lasting impact for many reasons. Not only was that type of language unusual for cinema at the time, but the line also appeared at a crucial and emotional moment in the movie, making it even more powerful.
2"I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse" - The Godfather (1972)
Credit: Thomas Park
Unforgettable scenes, shots, characterizations, and dialogues define the incredible The Godfather (1972).
Among its most celebrated lines is the quote delivered by Marlon Brando as Vito Corleone in one of cinema's greatest performances: "I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse." When you watch the film, the character's expression and demeanor make you completely believe he knows what he's saying. In a single line, Brando epitomizes the ideas of authority, power, and influence that define the criminal organization his character leads.
The line had such an impact that it was repeated in the sequel, 1974's The Godfather Part II, this time delivered by Vito's son, Michael Corleone (played by Al Pacino). And it also appears in the famous mafia series The Sopranos.
3"You talking to me?" - Taxi Driver (1976)
Credit: Lexi Anderson
A great line often comes from a great scene. And, without a doubt, De Niro's iconic "You talking to me?" moment as Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver (1976) is one of those perfect combinations.
The quote is repeated several times in the scene, and while it's phrased as a question, Travis Bickle has no actual interlocutor. Or rather, he's speaking to an imagined one.
The intensity with which the character delivers the dialogue in this scene has made it one of the most replicated and referenced moments in cinema. Do you remember the first time you watched it?
4"I am your father" - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
Credit: Inkredo Designer
Just like how people can't resist imitating the deep voice of the Dark Knight when they say, "I'm Batman," the same goes for Darth Vader's iconic line.
"I am your father" is not just a powerful quote that encapsulates a lot of drama and complexity in only four words; it's also one of the most intense moments in science fiction history. None other than Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker are the protagonists of this cinema's great twist.
While nothing can replace the surprise of experiencing it for the first time, it's always a joy to revisit the amazing The Empire Strikes Back (1980).
5"Go ahead, make my day" - Sudden Impact (1983)
Credit: Katelyn Greer
It is no coincidence that great actors are the ones who give voice to some of the most remembered movie lines.
And when we talk about great actors, Clint Eastwood is impossible to overlook. Eastwood's tough-guy demeanor can be clearly seen in the delivery of the iconic line "Go ahead, make my day" in Sudden Impact (1983).
In the scene, Eastwood's character challenges a criminal to attack him, without any fear or tremor in his voice. The phrase has become part of popular culture over time and is often used with that tough and defiant attitude.
6"I'll be back" - The Terminator (1984)
Credit: Igor Omilaev
Imagine you're at the office, and a colleague gets up from their desk to go get a snack, saying, "I'll be back." Besides the added touch of unnecessary drama, that phrase probably brings one particular movie character to mind: The Terminator.
The Terminator movie series has some catchy lines, and at least two of them are delivered by Arnold Schwarzenegger. The iconic "I'll be back" and "Hasta la vista, baby" aren't just incredibly cool; they're also universally recognized. You can use them as references, and everyone will get the nod.
7"You can't handle the truth!" - A Few Good Men (1992)
Credit: Justin Cron
Jack Nicholson is one of the most admired American actors, famous for his incredible talent, creativity, and charisma. It's no surprise that he has delivered some of cinema's most memorable lines, including the iconic "You can't handle the truth!" from A Few Good Men (1992).
The intensity of that line is amplified by Nicholson's performance and the tension of the scene. The phrase has been replicated in many movies and shows, including some parodies like the one delivered by Homer in the final episode of The Simpsons' fifth season.
8"Houston, we have a problem" - Apollo 13 (1995)
Credit: Niketh Vellanki
A funny way to announce a problem is to quote the famous line, "Houston, we have a problem."
As you know, Apollo 13 was the third mission intended to reach the moon. But on day 2, an oxygen tank exploded, seriously damaging the spacecraft and endangering everyone on it.
Although astronaut Jim Lovell's actual quote was slightly different, "Houston, we have a problem" became widely known thanks to Tom Hanks in the 1995 movie Apollo 13. The movie recounts the mission's dramatic incident and the successful efforts to rescue its crew.
9"You had me at 'hello'" - Jerry Maguire (1996)
Credit: Melissa McGovern
Romantic scenes have that special "something" that speaks to our hearts, and some of them remain forever in our collective memory. But beyond the glances and kisses, certain lines steal the spotlight, and Jerry Maguire (1996) has one of those unforgettable moments.
Renée Zellweger, as Dorothy Boyd, delivers this memorable line in response to Jerry's confession. After Jerry –played by Tom Cruise– declares his love for her with an emotional speech, Dorothy replies with the simple but powerful, "You had me at 'hello,'" breaking the tension and filling the screen with humor and love.
Has anyone ever "had you at 'hello'"?
10"I'm the king of the world!" - Titanic (1997)
Credit: K. Mitch Hodge
Probably anyone who has boarded a ship after 1997 has wanted to stand at the bow to stretch out their arms, proclaiming themselves king or queen of the world. No explanation needed, as we all recognize the iconic scene from James Cameron's unforgettable Titanic.
Leonardo DiCaprio delivered the famous line that became a classic, just like the movie. The actor pronounces it early in the film, symbolizing the freedom and hope of his young character.
One of the first to make a reference to the quote was Cameron himself when he received the Oscar for Best Picture in 1998. A perfect moment to feel like the king of the world!

Rougarou Fest Queen Embodies Louisiana Fifolet
The Rougarou Fest is proud to announce Mrs. Courtney Bennett will reign as the 2024 Rougarou Queen.
A native of Morgan City, and a resident of Houma since 1984, Courtney has been active and involved in gymnastics, cheering, dancing, and numerous music and art events in our community. She is the mother of two awesome children, Gavin, age 13, and Laurel, age 6. She has been married for 18 years to the love of her life, Garrett Bennett.
Courtney graduated from Nicholls State University with a degree in early childhood education. With that education and her creative passion, she spent many years working with children at the preschool at her church, with events at SOLA – a local children’s theatre, and as a dancer and instructor at Paddy Danos School of Dance. Because of her realization of her love of makeup and theater, she followed her creative dream and enrolled in cosmetology! Today she’s a hairstylist at Ambiance Salon in Houma.
Continuing her dreams of designing hair and make-up and ALWAYS a fan of dress up and costuming, she became involved in Rougarou Fest with Jonathan Foret. She has been a Rougarou witch for many years dancing the streets with her sister, Megan, and her fellow hairstylist and friend, Danae. She admits that the hours they spent doing witch make-up and costumes are just as fun as the parade. The first time she saw the Rougarou parade, she knew she had to be a part of it. It’s with her fellow witchy sisters, that she haunts the streets of Houma with their German witch dance.
She is very excited and appreciative to be able to take on this creative project and represent the festival as the 2024 Rougarou Queen. She looks forward to working with her longtime friend, Jonathan Foret, and his committee and volunteers. She encourages everyone to come out and enjoy everything the festival represents and has to offer!
Her costume is inspired by the story of the fifolet. In Louisiana folklore, the "fifolet" is a supernatural creature closely related to the "will-o'-the-wisp" found in other cultures. The fifolet is believed to be a type of mischievous spirit or fairy that appears as a glowing light, often seen floating over marshes, swamps, or other eerie, dark places.
Much like the will-o'-the-wisp, the fifolet is said to lead people astray, drawing them into dangerous or confusing situations. It’s often described as a trickster that lures travelers off their paths, playing with their sense of direction and perception. In some tales, encountering a fifolet might mean you're about to face some misfortune or get lost. The lore around fifolets reflects the rich tapestry of Cajun and Creole folklore, blending elements of European, African, and Native American traditions to create unique and localized myths.
The queen would like to thank her hair stylist and makeup artist, Dustin McElroy, and all the stylists at Ambiance Salon for helping make this possible. She would also like to thank Kathy Marmillion for creating her "Rougarou Queen" sash and the staff at Chez Lili Bridal for all of their hard work and support. She appreciates Dristy Foret Photography for beautifully capturing all of the hard work and talent that went into creating the fifolet-inspired queen. Most importantly, she would like to thank her husband and kids, along with all of her family and friends, for their love and support during the preparation to be the Rougarou Queen. And lastly, she thanks Jonathan Foret and the Rougarou Fest for the opportunity!
The Rougarou Fest is a family-friendly festival with a spooky flair that celebrates the rich folklore that exists along the bayous of Southeast Louisiana. It showcases live music, cultural activities, children’s activities, Cajun food, the Krewe Ga Rou parade, and so much more. All proceeds go to the South Louisiana Wetlands Discovery Center, a nonprofit organization that is revolutionizing how we think, teach and learn about Louisiana’s disappearing coast.
Each year a Rougarou Queen is selected to represent the festival at various events throughout the region. The queen is selected from our large team of volunteers by a committee of festival organizers. This ensures that our queen is aware of the details of our festival since she has been a part of bringing our event to life in previous years.
The Rougarou Queen will reign over the parade at 7PM Saturday, October 19, 2024.

Nickel-A-Dance Fall 2024 Season to Begin on Frenchmen Street
by: OffBeat Staff
The fall 2024 season of Nickel-A-Dance, a beloved free traditional jazz concert series, is set to begin on September 29. For over three decades, Nickel-A-Dance has brought live jazz to the public, offering an afternoon of family-friendly entertainment on Sundays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. This year, the series moves to a new location at Favela Chic, located at 525 Frenchmen Street, continuing its tradition on this famous music corridor.
Originally started in 1994, Nickel-A-Dance has become a staple for fans of New Orleans jazz who may not frequent nightclubs. It attracts a diverse crowd, including children, families, and seniors, all coming together to celebrate traditional jazz as America’s original dance music. This fall’s lineup will feature some of the city’s most renowned jazz musicians.
Lars Edegran and The Palm Court Jazz All-Stars are set to perform on October 20. Edegran, originally from Sweden, has been a New Orleans resident since 1966 and is known for his versatility on piano, guitar, and banjo. He has worked with jazz greats like Earl Hines and George Lewis, and his band will showcase the best of New Orleans traditional jazz.
The fall series will conclude on October 27 with Gregg Stafford and The Jazz Hounds. Stafford, a respected trumpeter and vocalist, has led several prominent New Orleans jazz bands, including Danny Barker’s Jazz Hounds and the Young Tuxedo Brass Band. He has dedicated his career to preserving the musical traditions of New Orleans and remains an active figure in the city’s jazz community.

The artwork will be both meaningful and representative of the diversity of our city, boosting social cohesion and strengthening community relationships.
The inaugural NOLA Mural Fest will launch in the fall of 2024 at Beanlandia October 25th-27th.

Billy Nungesser Lt. Governor of Louisiana
For the fourth consecutive year, Louisiana will showcase its vibrant culture in the 2025 Tournament of Rose Parade in Pasadena, California! This year’s float, featuring a Louisiana alligator adorned with beads, a Cajun dance hall, and pots of boiled seafood, perfectly captures the essence of a “Louisiana Saturday Night.” Plus, enjoy mid-parade entertainment by rising country star Timothy Wayne!
We can’t wait to share Louisiana’s celebratory spirit and unique culture with the world once again.
