Every day on the front lines, we meet people who are navigating the hardships of homelessness — often carrying deep trauma, isolation, and unmet needs. In these vulnerable moments, individuals are at heightened risk of being targeted by traffickers who exploit instability and desperation. Additionally, human trafficking can increase during cold weather season because the harsh conditions make vulnerable individuals more desperate for basic survival needs like food, shelter, and warm clothing. This prevention and awareness training is designed for providers throughout the homeless sector to assist in recognizing these risks and equipping the field with tools to respond with compassion and increased awareness; that can mean the difference between continued exploitation and the first step toward safety and healing.
This training will explore the vulnerabilities that can increase an individual’s risk of being trafficked, learn how to recognize the signs that someone may be a victim of trafficking, and understand appropriate steps to take when a victim has been identified.
This session will highlight key statistics and dynamics of human trafficking in Connecticut, with a focus on the intersection between trafficking and homelessness. Through this training, participants will gain the knowledge and tools to respond effectively, ensuring safety, dignity, and support for survivors.
Training Objectives:
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Identify factors that make individuals experiencing homelessness more vulnerable to trafficking.
- Recognize indicators and warning signs of trafficking within the homeless sector.
- Apply best practices for responding when a potential trafficking situation is identified.
- Increase awareness of human trafficking dynamics and statistics specific to Connecticut.
- Strengthen their ability to provide trauma-informed, survivor-centered support.
