Just a Little Shift in Perspective

Butterflies have returned to Well of Mercy, and they are most welcome. I’ve already pursued them with my camera among the flowers behind the Well House, hoping to catch one doing something especially beautiful. And I did—wings pumping, colors shimmering, flitting from bloom to bloom. I thought I had seen all there was to see in that corner of our yard.

But, Brenda pointed out something I had completely missed. From the upstairs window, the flowers—creeping phlox—formed a perfect heart. Though I had stood in front of those flowers and beside those flowers, I had not seen the heart until I looked from a new perspective.

We see so much more when we allow ourselves more than one point of view. In her book Everyday Sacred, Sue Bender tells of a photography student assigned to take 100 pictures of a single, simple object. The student chose a white ceramic pot. The first few photos came easily—but she still had 96 to go.

So she began to experiment. She noticed how the pot’s white surface reflected the world around it, sometimes acting like a mirror. At night, she used car lights to illuminate it: headlights created stark contrast, brake lights turned it red, hazard lights made it glow yellow. Beside the television, it became blue. She took the pot everywhere—even to Europe—photographing it in Florence and Rome, even beneath Michelangelo’s tomb. Reflecting on the experience, she said, “Sometimes I’d find the simple, unassuming place more remarkable than the remarkable place.”

If there are more than one hundred ways to see an ordinary white pot, imagine the possibilities for seeing an “ordinary” day, an “ordinary” job, “ordinary” aging, “ordinary” grief—or whatever fills our lives. Sometimes, all it takes is a shift in perspective to lead us to the heart of the matter.

Well of Mercy is a sacred place for gaining such perspective. You may not arrive carrying a ceramic pot, but you likely come with worry, grief, fatigue, or disappointment. Here, beside the creek, the Spirit whispers—and something begins to shift. Perhaps the words of vespers color your heart in an unexpected way. Perhaps a walk through the labyrinth opens a path you didn’t know existed. Or perhaps the simple gift of rest, reflection, and prayer renews what has grown weary, and you sense God’s presence anew.

Sometimes we must place ourselves in different settings to deepen our faith and wisdom. You just might discover God’s heart blooming in the most unexpected places.

Well of Mercy relies on your donations to maintain our Quiet Place. Thank you in advance for being part of this healing ministry.

Sharing Mercy

May is Mental Health Awareness Month! In recognition of this important time, Well of Mercy is offering support to Daymark Recovery Services in Iredell County to care for individuals facing mental health and substance use challenges.

As part of Daymark's daily compassionate work, they often encounter clients who arrive hungry or thirsty—especially as the weather warms. To help meet this simple but meaningful need, we are collecting: small bottles of water and individually wrapped snacks.

Your donations are a tangible way to extend care and dignity to our neighbors. Thank you for your generosity.

Save the Date

Well's Christmas Festival & Craft Sale

Calling all artisans—painters, potters, woodworkers, fiber artists, bakers, jewelry makers, and more—to bring your handmade creations to sell during our Christmas Festival and Open House on December 6, 2026.

Rather than charging a vendor fee, we simply ask participants to offer a donation from their profits, in whatever amount feels right. These gifts help support the ministry of Well of Mercy and our mission of providing a peaceful place for rest, reflection, and renewal.

From 2-5pm visitors can enjoy the beauty and stillness of Well of Mercy, and do a little Christmas shopping while supporting talented crafters. We hope the day will be a gathering of gifts—creativity, generosity, and the spirit of the season shared together.

Watch for the Crafter Application form in our May newsletter.

The Hum of Creation

Though there have not been many showers, April still managed to help unfurl awesome beauty across the land, turning the landscape into a paradise in full bloom.

Morning arrives each day on the wings of bright, cheerful birdsong as sunlight glistens across the many shades of green. The sun’s warm glow illuminates the colors of dogwoods, azaleas, irises, and phlox. Life has regained its full momentum, with bees buzzing busily from flower to flower, butterflies drifting lazily on the breeze, and our friend the wren gathering materials for her nest with haste. The hum of creation has truly returned in full chorus.

There is no better time to soak in spring than now. Whether you are here at Well of Mercy, at home, or traveling afar, I pray that you find a soulful moment to slow down, tune into the natural world, and receive the beauty and grace it so generously offers.

Gift Certificate for Mother's Day

This Mother's Day, give more than flowers--give her space to breathe, rest, and be renewed. A gift certificate to Well of Mercy offers the moms in your life a chance to step away from the noise and reconnect with themselves and with God in a place of peace and beauty. It's thoughtful, restorative, and lasts a lot longer than a bouquet.
